The tube connecting the grey bag to the filter is very long, but it's also an easy fix: I'll probably end up cutting and reattaching it.. Right now I have the grey bag for dirty water hanging from a limb about 7' off the ground, and with everything connected the blue bag for clean water is touching the ground. On the plus side, you have plenty of tube to work with if you need to!
I'm not sure if the whole system is meant to hang as one piece, but that's how I set it up and I feel like having a whole 4 liters of water pulling on all the hoses and connections can't be a good thing. Sawyer provides one strap to hang the system, I wish they provided two, the second one being much longer so one can hang the blue bag lower than the grey bag without putting all the weight on the hoses and filter. But again, this is an easy fix: I just used an extra lashing strap I had laying around.
The flow rate... Meh, I guess it could filter 4 liters in 15 minutes. Mine started really slow, but fortunately I had looked over the directions beforehand and remembered that it had said something about "air locks" in the system. So I fiddled around and disconnected some hoses to release the air and eventually everything sped up nicely. I'm sure once I learn how to effectively get the air out of the filter that it'll do 4 in 15.
The water does have a plastic taste upon first usage but I don't care. Overall I'd recommend it.
For the cons:
The filter seems to be fragile and unsupported externally. In the instructions it states that you can not let the filter freeze. I understand that and understand why you can't. I do think that the company could have supported the filter better than seemingly a plastic housing. I assume they did this for the weight factor and this particular system is one of the heaviest out there. For me, on this item in my bag, I do not care about weight as much as durability. The system seems robust in most ways but I believe the fatal flaw is the filter durability.
The system, out of the box, flowed slower with well water than advertised. I timed three consecutive filters of the 4 litter bags with tap water alone and they were almost double the time advertised (yes I followed the instructions of priming the unit to the exact instructions). This does not make a difference to me as I plan on setting-and-forgetting it while I tend to other things in camp but I do worry that the filtration will slow even more over time.
For the pro's:
I could sum everything up by saying "massive options" but what fun would that be?
Some say this is one of the heaviest systems out there but I like to think of the things I would not have on the trip. I would not have the dirty bag and an extra tube going to the filter. Everything else I would have in my bag. I would have the clean bag, a water filter, and a hose going from the filter to the clean bag in any system I would backpack with. In my opinion, this gives me many options as well. What if my clean bag broke?Read more ›
If you read the brief instructions that come with the unit, it states that some parts may vary from the diagram. They incorporate suggestions from their customers, make product modifications, but apparently don't always update their instructions. I experienced this, but the changes were so minor and connecting the parts is so intuitive that it really does not matter. I couldn't be more pleased with this purchase.
Spent a week in the BWCA in northern MN and after a couple times running lake water thru, the filter began to get really slow and it was hard to backflow properly in the field. I ended up leaving it for hours to get my 4 liters of water. I even attempted to backlow it after every 4 liters from the start! Good thing we also had a couple of pumps.
If there was a way to pre-filter the water maybe it would be more effective. The bags and filter cartridge tend to be pretty bulky as well.
On the plus side it does claim to filter out viruses! No proof of that though as none of my party got sick from drinking pump filtered water.
