The Sawyer 4 Liter Complete Water Filtration System is overall a great system. I just set it up a few hours ago and tested it with my water hose. I saw particulate going into the filter, it was crystal clear coming out. (I know I shouldn't always expect clear water, but I should always expect clean water.) It's easy enough to set up, I just have a few minor modifications that I would make to make it easier to "use."

The tube connecting the grey bag to the filter is very long, but it's also an easy fix: I'll probably end up cutting and reattaching it.. Right now I have the grey bag for dirty water hanging from a limb about 7' off the ground, and with everything connected the blue bag for clean water is touching the ground. On the plus side, you have plenty of tube to work with if you need to!

I'm not sure if the whole system is meant to hang as one piece, but that's how I set it up and I feel like having a whole 4 liters of water pulling on all the hoses and connections can't be a good thing. Sawyer provides one strap to hang the system, I wish they provided two, the second one being much longer so one can hang the blue bag lower than the grey bag without putting all the weight on the hoses and filter. But again, this is an easy fix: I just used an extra lashing strap I had laying around.

The flow rate... Meh, I guess it could filter 4 liters in 15 minutes. Mine started really slow, but fortunately I had looked over the directions beforehand and remembered that it had said something about "air locks" in the system. So I fiddled around and disconnected some hoses to release the air and eventually everything sped up nicely. I'm sure once I learn how to effectively get the air out of the filter that it'll do 4 in 15.

The water does have a plastic taste upon first usage but I don't care. Overall I'd recommend it.

I almost bought the platypus but being it doesn't filter viruses, I fortunately found the Sawyer .02 filter. Lifetime filter guaranteed (million gallon). Fill and hang, gravity does all the work. However Moontrail sells this for $163.00 so get it from them. This compacts well and is light!

Let me start by saying I absolutely enjoy this product. It performs as advertised (minus a few minutes in my case, more later) and I believe it is worth the money I have invested.

For the cons:

The filter seems to be fragile and unsupported externally. In the instructions it states that you can not let the filter freeze. I understand that and understand why you can't. I do think that the company could have supported the filter better than seemingly a plastic housing. I assume they did this for the weight factor and this particular system is one of the heaviest out there. For me, on this item in my bag, I do not care about weight as much as durability. The system seems robust in most ways but I believe the fatal flaw is the filter durability.

The system, out of the box, flowed slower with well water than advertised. I timed three consecutive filters of the 4 litter bags with tap water alone and they were almost double the time advertised (yes I followed the instructions of priming the unit to the exact instructions). This does not make a difference to me as I plan on setting-and-forgetting it while I tend to other things in camp but I do worry that the filtration will slow even more over time.

For the pro's:

I could sum everything up by saying "massive options" but what fun would that be?

Some say this is one of the heaviest systems out there but I like to think of the things I would not have on the trip. I would not have the dirty bag and an extra tube going to the filter. Everything else I would have in my bag. I would have the clean bag, a water filter, and a hose going from the filter to the clean bag in any system I would backpack with. In my opinion, this gives me many options as well. What if my clean bag broke?

Quite simply the best all around water purifier I've ever had. Very easy to connect and use; and very portable for backpacks. I will use this at home; pack in a suitcase for hotels; and take camping. This is also an excellent filter to have on hand for emergency preparedness. It's very well constructed and looks like it will hold up well. FedEx messed up my shippment, so I had opportunity to experience Sawyer's customer service. Refreshingly outstanding.

If you read the brief instructions that come with the unit, it states that some parts may vary from the diagram. They incorporate suggestions from their customers, make product modifications, but apparently don't always update their instructions. I experienced this, but the changes were so minor and connecting the parts is so intuitive that it really does not matter. I couldn't be more pleased with this purchase.

Overall a great product. I had no shipping problems everything worked as it needs to purify water. Thing is Sawyer seems to be great engineers that designed good products like this one That Works and should remove viruses at 0.01 microns the level of virus removal needed. However they are engineers and being an engineer Its hard to send the message out the right way. They have loads of data I bet however stating it in a presentable way for none engineers is the hard thing for them from what I see their data is legit. However a few things to change is using the manual that comes with the kit everything will work as stated, You must realize this is not a cheap fast right now product. They what people to have safe drinking water. Thats what Im looking for!
Now on to the speed of the product filter/purifier, Using a differential equation from fluid mechanics the optimal time for this system with no modifications will produce clean water at around 15 min at sea level. Higher elevations where I did my test resulted at a slight change to 18 minutes @ 7000 ft. Now the dirtier the filter the slower the filtering process which i see a pre silt filtered water taking slightly longer at around 23 minutes at 7000 ft. Now compare that to pumping and (boiling or chemical treatment) 4liter in 4-8 minutes ( depending on filter msr, etc ) then a 10 - 45 minute wait for boil or chemical treatment 15 - 60 minutes. The minimax and maximin value you can see that there is a faster process at 15 minutes out there, and there are a great number of longer wait time systems out there. Which sets this complete system at a lower end of time to purify water. Time wise It is good-excellent for viral free water.
