Sawyer Products Mini Water Filter
A lifetime of water at hand
The Mini Water Filter is the lightest and most versatile personal filtration system from Sawyer. It weighs 2 ounces and fits in the palm of your hand. While incredibly small and convenient, this filter was tested to 10 million parts of bacteria and one million parts of protozoa without a single breakthrough — the highest testing level for filtration.
The size, convenience, and performance of the Sawyer Mini filter make it perfect for everything from camping with the kids to travelling abroad where tap and bottle water cannot be trusted. It comes with all the accessories you need to use this system in any of the following ways:
- Attach to the included 16-ounce reusable squeeze pouch to drink directly from the filter or squeeze water into a water bottle.
- Screw onto most disposable water bottles.
- Attach inline on a hydration pack — no adapters required.
- Sip from the personal drinking straw and drink directly from the source, or scoop up a bottle of water directly from any freshwater lake, river, or stream.
Versatile, Use Anywhere, Take Anywhere Size
Filter into a water bottle to enjoy yourself or share with others.
Sip from a container (or right from the water source) with the included straw.
Screw the Mini onto water or soda bottles with a standard threaded top.
Attach inline to a hydration pack (sold separately) — hose connectors are built into the filter.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Absolute Micron Filtering Technology?
The proprietary element of Sawyer’s water filters is comprised of tiny 'U' shaped micro-tubes that allow water to enter into their core through tiny micro-pores. The high number of those tiny tubes and their surface area allows the filter to have one of the fastest flow rates in the world. This high flow rate eliminates the need to store water, reducing the possibility of water contamination after the filtration process.
Each filter is certified for absolute microns; that means there is no pore size larger than 0.1 in size. This makes it nearly impossible for harmful bacteria, protozoa, or cysts like E. coli, Giardia, Vibrio cholerae, and Salmonella typhi (which cause Cholera and Typhoid) to pass through the Sawyer Mini. Sawyer filters have been tested by independent and qualified research laboratories and found to remove 7 log (99.99999%) of bacteria and 6 log (99.9999%) of protozoa, exceeding US EPA standards. The filter does not remove chemicals, dissolved solids, or viruses. However, viruses are very rarely found in North America or when travelling to foreign cities.
How often should I clean the filter?
For longer filter life, you should backwash and sanitize the filter after every outing. The Mini is backflushable almost indefinitely, and there are no expensive cartridges to replace, ever. Sawyer recommends sanitizing the filter before prolonged storage.
Will it get clogged while I'm out on a trip?
Even with very high particulate/turbid water you should get 5 to 10 gallons through the filter. If this is not enough water for your trip, you should plan on field backwashing your filter.

The Sawyer Mini Water Filter is a second generation filter that is the lightest and most versatile personal filtration system from Sawyer. With a total field weight of 2 ounces it fits in the palm of your hand. This tiny filter does the same job that the Sawyer PointOne filter does but now in a more compact, personal size. The Sawyer Mini filter is perfect for everything from camping with the kids to traveling abroad where tap and bottle water cannot be trusted.
The filter removes 7 log (99.99999%) of all bacteria (like salmonella) as well as other harmful bacteria which causes cholera and E. coli and 6 log (99.9999%) of all protozoa such as giardia and cryptosporidium. These removal rates equal or exceed other filter options. EPA guidelines allow ten times more protozoa left in the water than Sawyer PointOne filters allow.
Attach the Mini to the included drinking pouch, use the included straw to drink directly from your water source, connect it to hydration pack tubing (sold separately), or screw it onto standard disposable bottles (28 mm thread). The Sawyer Mini Water Filter is rated up to 100,000 gallons. It comes with 16-ounce reusable squeeze pouch, 7-inch drinking straw, and cleaning plunger.
Since 1984, Sawyer Products has offered the best, most technologically advanced solutions for protection against sun, bugs, water, and injuries -- everything from first aid kits developed for wilderness to point-of-use water filters that filter contaminated water to levels cleaner than U.S. bottled water.

We made it to a nice frozen shoulder of the Rattlesnake Creek in Missoula. The temp was below freezing, i'de say 20-30°F, or somewhere around there. I chipped through an ice shelf on the creek and dunked the bag into the ice cold water. Filling it was easy with the current but I can see some wishing it came with a bigger bag because it doesn't look like much when the bag is filled. I use a 32oz Platypus bag I have, and carry the included 16oz bag as a backup! Anyway, I screwed the filter onto the bag, tipped it upside down and water came out with a very effortless squeeze. After I got done laughing about how simple this was, I gave my boy Yoshi a drink as well (my English Bulldog). He also took to it well, as he's a big fan of drinking from water bottles anyway. So yeah, this is a dog friendly design!
Also out of curiosity I affixed the straw directly to the filter and drank directly from the creek and it was quite easy to do. The amount of suction required was similar to drinking a milkshake, and the flow rate was surprisingly great. At that point one can either shake the filter free of the water still inside the filter, and/or blow through it providing the same effect. (I should note that if using this in freezing temperatures, to prevent the filter from freezing after use, you will want to keep it on or near your body's core).
When I got home I did the back flush with the syringe twice, and the thing flushed perfectly. This thing was a piece of cake to use, and was exactly what I was looking for to carry in my Heli Pack. I would recommend this filter to anyone!...and for $20, you cannot beat this. Plus you get a bag, straw, and syringe with it. Buy one now!
Anyone with questions, feel free to ask/comment. Glad to help.
UPDATE: After 18 months of steady use, this thing is still running strong! I have also come up with a cool addition to this water filter...I removed the sticker on the white middle section and I have replaced it with about 5 feet of standard width 1.88" DUCT TAPE! Using the filter AS the spool for the tape, allowing this filter to be a multi-purpose device. Some people will carry duct tape with them as a emergency repair kit, but we all know duct tape has a million uses, it's the cousin of paracord practically. Trust me it is cool, with the duct tape wrapped around it multiple times, the tape will eventually be flush with the filter end caps and not look sloppy at all. Plus it's a cool way to personalize your filter with a color or pattern to match your kit. If your a little picky like me, I didn't exactly want a "blue" item with my stealth gear. Anyway, this method allows you to carry a decent amount of duct tape spooled around an item you are already carrying, and not taking up ANY extra space than the filter already is using inside your kit.
Why not carry some...it might come in handy sometime.
Anyway, I got an email from sawyer (who I do not recommend at this point and not because of their products) I went to review what I wrote and may have changed it but I found this was already written for me (below the line). I have the original email of my review and the email from sawyer of their complaint of my review. So they kinda goofed it there? Because I have never opened the original filter in the package! It's in my bug out bag. I definitely would not trust these people or person(s)at sawyer...Though I would buy their products at a different location.
PS: Oh and by the way I have a record of this and a screen shot as well..I should really file a complaint. Lets see what happens..-Jay
Great product. Arrived in several days. Packaged well and got just what I ordered.
I would reccomend this to anyone needing a great filter thats very light weight and small, yet filters a large amount of water for it's size and price.
Unlike some filers this is much more versatile and has a .1 micron, not a .2 micron filter.
One of the built in problems is that the container which has the unfiltered water in it and on it is above the filter and the container that will hold the filtered water. One would want to wipe the unfiltered water container of most of the water on its exterior to keep the filtered water container as clean as possible.
I bought the filter with a sixteen ounce bag for the dirty water. Using the filter convinces me that the 16 ounce bag is too small. The bag isn’t completely emptied when it is used so collecting a half gallon of water for example would require many repeated filling and draining of the water bag. There are two easy solutions:
A. Buy a 32 ounce water bag
B. Bring along a two liter plastic bottle. Emptying a two liter plastic bottle is much quicker than and equally as easy as emptying the bag. Neither the bags nor the plastic bottle have valves so eventually a partial vacuum forms in them although it is an easy matter to invert the filter and container and release the coupling to allow air into the container.
When the filtering operation is finished one must remember to move the dirty water container away from the clean water container to avoid accidental contamination because the bag retains a little water.
All in all this is an excellent water filter for the backpacker and I'm very happy with my purchase.
