Ready for the BackcountryThe ultra-light, easily packable Sawyer MINI water filter fits in the palm of your hand and weighs just 2 ounces — making it ideal for ultralight backpacking and camping, as well as emergency preparedness. Each MINI comes with a durable, collapsible 16-ounce reusable squeeze pouch that rolls up when empty, so it won't take up space in your pack. |
Filtered Water AnywhereThe reusable 0.1 absolute micron MINI water filter produces clean water from freshwater lakes, rivers, and streams, as well as faucets in your home or hotel room while traveling (domestic and international). The MINI also comes with a straw that enables you to drink filtered water directly from a water source. |
Easy DrinkingTo start filtering water, simply fill the squeeze pouch with water from your water source, then screw the MINI filter onto the pouch and start drinking right from the MINI or squeeze into a water bottle to share with others. The MINI also screws onto water or soda bottles with a standard threaded top, and you can attach inline on a hydration pack to filter water from a bladder (sold separately). |
Sawyer's International MissionSawyer believes everyone deserves access to clean water — from hikers in the backcountry to indigenous people groups in the remotest corners of the world. For over 10 years, Sawyer has been working with a variety of charities and churches who are on a mission to make a long-lasting impact in the lives of those around the world without access to clean drinking water. |

Hollow Fiber MembraneSawyer’s water filters are comprised of tiny hollow fiber membranes that allow water to enter into their core through tiny micro-pores. Thicker fiber walls combined with a smaller inner diameter make Sawyer fibers 75% stronger* than typical hollow fiber membranes, giving you a fast flow and enabling the filter to be continually backwashed forcefully to restore up to 98% of the original flow rate. * Clean Water Institute of Calvin University; July, 2018 |
0.1 Absolute Micron FilteringEach Sawyer water filter features 0.1 micron absolute filtration, meaning there is no pore size larger than 0.1 micron in size. This makes it nearly impossible for microplastics, harmful bacteria, protozoa, or cysts like E. coli, Giardia, Vibrio cholerae, and Salmonella typhi (which cause Cholera and Typhoid) to pass through. |
Fiber ProtectionSawyer's hollow fiber membranes are fully encased and sealed to keep them protected. When fibers are not enclosed, physical damage of exposed fibers could allow harmful pathogens to pass through. |
Tested 3 TimesEvery Sawyer filter is performance tested three different times during the manufacturing process for your protection. Testing occurs after the fiber element construction and twice after casing assembly to ensure no harmful pathogens leak through the sealed case or internal O-rings. |

Sawyer company- fix your O rings on the mini and you go from a 1 star to a 5!
A simple hack to replace or substitute the bag that comes with it. This filter screws onto either a 700 ML or 1 Liter SmartWater bottle. The sports cap on the 700 ML is the perfect size to push the outflow end of the filter into and is tight enough to support the weight of a full, 1 L bottle. Just squeeze the air out of the bottle on the outflow side and lean it against a tree or rock to gravity feed or you can squeeze the inflow bottle to speed things along. Make sure you cover the washer with your finger when shaking out the filter so it doesn't fly off and get lost. A 5/16" ID x 1/2" Yellow Plastic Screw Protector (made by Hillman and available at Lowe's for $0.92 for a 3 pack - Model # 881039, hardware section where the metal bolts, washers, etc are in the steel drawers. They will be marked with Hillman on them.) will fit over the inflow nipple of the Sawyer Mini Filter to prevent leakage and keep dirt out of the filter when it's stored in your pack.
First Pic is a 1 L bottle that is full, being held by the filter pushed into the sports cap. The second pic (sorry for the blur) is filling a 1L bottle with the air squeezed out of it. The third pic shows my finger over the washer when shaking out the filter so it doesn't get lost. Last pic is of the Hillman cap and package.

We used our standard pump filter for the entire trip with the exception of the first night when I thought I'd try the Sawyer mini out. As stated by other reviewers, the ease of use shown in the instructions is nothing like the actual functionality of the product. It was a pain keeping the o-ring and washer in without losing them. The bag creates a vacuum as soon as you dip it into the water, so filling is almost impossible. The best thing is that only my canteen was filled (once - took forever), and nobody else in our group used it. The bad thing is that I now am being treated for giardia. All instructions were followed exactly, but this filter worked so poorly that I may as well have drunk straight from the river. And now that the return window has passed, I don't even get my money back from the two filters I purchased (not to mention the hundreds of $ in medical bills and lost work).
If you're looking for a good filter to protect you from bacteria, parasites, etc. KEEP LOOKING because this is not the filter you're looking for!
Also, the cap easily breaks or falls off and gets lost. I lost 1 cap and 2 snapped off, and didn't find anywhere where I could purchase just the caps and not the entire filter all over again.

I bought this filter a few months ago[ to add to a survival/camp pack and have since filtered about 40 liters of water through it. This filter cleans anything from questionable garden hose water to murky lake water into perfectly clear and crisp to the taste drinking water. At first, I was skeptical of course. Who would think that you can turn brown, dirty water into clean, perfectly safe water with just such a small, affordable filter? But rest assured, this filter is a powerhouse and continues to go above and beyond.
One tip I have for easier and more bulk filtration is to pick up a Platypus Plastic 2L Water Bag (Link below). It's less than $10 just like the bottle you get with the filter except it allows you to filter 70oz rather than 16oz. I also got a grommet kit from a local craft store and placed 2 grommets in the corner of the bag in the seam. I then ran a 1 foot section of para-cord through the grommets which allowed me to hang the bottle on a tree branch or any other convenient location. This way you can let gravity do the work and continue on with your camp chores. I was able to filter 2 liters of water this way in around 10 minutes.
One word of caution: Sawyer claims that you can filter 1,000,000 gallons of water through this filter (you're probably more likely to lose the filter before you get to that point) regardless, cleaning is a must. It will greatly extend the life and quality of your filter and water. After every filtration session I recommend flushing the filter with clean water using he provided syringe. Don't be afraid to really shoot the water in there, you're only helping your filter.
All in all this filter was a GREAT buy. I don't think you can find a better filter, especially one under the $100 mark!

So why did I buy the Sawyer Mini (SM)? Well, I was interested to try a different water filtration system to compare it with the DTT I normally use.
What are the advantages of the SM:
1) It is much lighter than the DTT (SM = 53g vs DTT = 138g including bottle) so is good just to keep as a back up in your back pack when out trekking (DrinkSafe also produce a lightweight 'Waterstraw' 40g currently £16.95 which has superior filtering to the SM but is not as versatile)
2) Versatility i) You can use it like a filter 'straw'. It actually comes with a plastic straw that you just place in the water and drink filtered water.
ii) You can screw it into many different bottles like coke bottles or the 16oz bag that it comes with (this 500ml bag is way too small for practical use and Sawyer should provide a bigger more usable bag). It also combines well with collapsible water bottles such as the Evernew bottles. It also screws into my Platypus bottles but water does leak through the thread when under pressure which is not good for potential cross contamination. iii) You can also use the SM as an in-line water filter with back-pack water bladders.
3) The SM can be flushed through using a syringe that comes with it. This means that you can keep the filter clean and filtering pretty much forever and Sawyer claim that the filter is good for 100,000 gallons of filtering which is incredible. This is a big advantage over the DTT which can't be easily flushed through. You therefore have to be careful with the DTT not to get too many particulates in your water and clog up the filter. You will never be at risk as the DTT will always filter out contaminants but will eventually clog up. Nevertheless, Drinksafe claim it is good for 1600 litres and I have had bottles for several years and they haven't clogged up yet (I am careful not to get too many particulates in the water though).
What are the disadvantages of the SM:
1) SM DOES NOT FILTER OUT VIRUSES AND CHEMICALS - this is one MAJOR disadvantage of this water filtration technology compared to the DTT in my opinion. For highland water courses where farm chemical run off and viruses are less of an issue this is not a problem. However, I want a water filter that is good for both highland and lowland water courses - ie. wherever I happen to find myself. In this case the DTT is far superior.
The above comparison means that I couldn't use the SM as my only water filter unless I know that I'm only going to be in higher areas with no agricultural run off. The DTT will therefore remain my default and most usable water filter when out trekking and the one I would recommend to people looking for a water filter that filters out pretty much everything a British water course can throw up. However, I will probably take the SM along with the DTT when I'm wild camping to use it to filter out particulates when decanting water into my DTT. This will prevent my DTT from clogging up knowing that I can flush out all the accrued particulates from the SM later using the syringe.
In conclusion, if I had to buy just one water filter, I would buy the Drinksafe Systems Travel Tap Pull Top. Used in combination, the Sawyer Mini can be used to provide particulate free water for the DTT. This is how I will use them together. The DTT wins on what it will filter out from the water, whereas the SM wins on versatility and flushability. The DTT wins overall in my opinion as the filtering of viruses and chemicals is my most important concern with a filtration system. Hope the comparison is helpful to potential buyers.
