I did enjoy the read and I think I will pick up Julie's other books.
The book starts by breaking my heart and it reeled me in. It had me at that point. Lux - I like her. She strong, smart, and cares a lot about those around her. My heart broke for her and the boy she loved.
As for Sebastian, he's the perfect book bf. he's not one with a troubled past. No deep dark secrets to uncover from him. He was sweet and charming. He was always upfront with his feelings for Lux. My heart broke for him the way things turned out for him.
To say my biggest surprise in the book is that I did not expect it to have a suspense thriller plot to it.
75% of the book flops from future to past as Lux tells is her story. I fell in love with this book. I must say I will never judge a book by how many reviews there are. This book hardly has any review on amazon but it was an amazing read for me.
The subplot, gives us food for thought. The hand young girls are dealt by men especially so called 'rich' men is horrendous. My heart goes out to all girls in this predicament, either in their homes or from others. Case in point is almost 300 girls that were kidnapped from their school in Northern Nigeria. Where are those girls? What is happening to them? My heart bleeds every time I think about them. I keep asking myself the question, why???
In conclusion I love this book.
The writing is a breath of fresh air, in my opinion, and a welcome change from the drabby and uninspiring writing you may often find in these types of books. The entire story is written from Lux's upbeat, quick-tempoed and extremely honest point of view. Whereas many book are written from the h's POV, in a manner that honestly gives you nothing, in this book you know and get Lux from the start. You can't be mistaken with who or what she is.
There were obviously some moments in the book that felt too tweeny for me (silly moments that were just too silly, stupid and reckless decisions that were just to stupid and reckless), and markedly lowered the reliability of the story. Also, I would have liked the h/H relationship to draw out a bit more slowly and "flowingly" than it did (he's hateful and awful towards her, than instantly understanding and interested again?), and for some of the characters to not seem so caricature-ish.
At the end of the day, it feels like the focus of the book isn't necessarily the relationship or the investigation, but rather Lux's unique style of thinking and acting (and thus the style of the writing in this book), and I was quite alright with it.
I will just end by saying that the parts with Mrs. Pattel were genius and oh so fun and great.
Lux and Bash are two young loves from opposite sides of the track. Lux is dirt poor, "white trash" with ambition a mile wide. Bash is the son of a senator who could want for nothing. He wants more from life. He's level headed and grounded and head over heals for Lux.
This is a story about love lost... Heartache... Reconnecting... And second chances. There is a great mystery/drama element that will keep you turning the pages! I absolutely loved this book!!
