After spending months away from her husband while he was deployed, reading and writing was her escape from the loneliness. Both her maternal and paternal grandmothers were librarians, which only intensified her love of reading. Just the fact that you would fool yourself into thinking that you are immune to him is so dang cute. There is no way - NO WAY, faithful readers - that you will resist him.
The youngest Hennington brother, Wyatt spent years (somewhat) pining for Presley, who loved his older brother Zach. Not one to wallow in unrequited want, Wyatt made sure he soothed his (somewhat) broken heart by making himself at home between the thighs of the available ladies of Bell Buckle, Tennessee. He knew he was always looking for something, though, even if he wasn't sure what that "something" actually was.
Two years ago, when Presley returned to Bell Buckle, her best friend Angie came from Philadelphia for a visit. (While it is not necessary to have not read Say You'll Stay, which is focused on Zach and Presley, you really should because it's a beautiful second-chance love story.) Wyatt was attracted to Angie, and they shared a hot night together. She returned for another visit, and she and Wyatt again rocked that headboard.
It isn't that Angie was left heartbroken when Wyatt left her in the morning to go to work; it's more that she was left disappointed. She liked him, and she thought they had a good time. But waking up to an empty bed made her feel discarded. A month later, she feels something else entirely, and she has to go discuss this with Wyatt.
Her third trip to Bell Buckle undoubtedly will muddle up Angie's carefully constructed world. She has her job as co-owner and business manager of a successful Philly bakery, and she likes her single-ness. She's made peace with being alone and having the occasional overnight guest, with playing beloved Auntie to Presley's two sons. This thing with Wyatt has gone and rearranged everything.
She agrees to give Wyatt three months, during which they will figure out their new reality. She sets some rules that everyone knows will get broken (one of those is no kissing, which, COME ON, Angie - this is Wyatt, who is irresistible!), and Corinne Michaels makes it so much fun to watch Angie lose both the battle and the war.
What I enjoy most about these books is that Michaels writes not about twenty-somethings but about people well into adulthood. Angie and Wyatt are in their late thirties. They have lived long enough to know themselves and to know what they want and need to be happy. There is no need for self-discovery. There is no need to wait and see.
There is, however, tremendous need to stay. And sometimes staying is the hardest thing to do, whether staying in one place or staying true to yourself and the one you love.
Michaels will make you cry. Oh, will she ever. She'll also give you a raging case of quivering loins (let's just say that Wyatt earned his reputation ... wink wink). Whereas Zach and Presley's story is one of second chances and finding their way back, Wyatt and Angie's story is one of finding their way toward. Each has moments of feeling a need to run away, even as they know they would much rather run to.
I loved getting to know Wyatt and Angie. I loved watching her let down her guard, and I loved watching him let go of guilt. These two show you that while love sometimes percolates over time, it also sometimes comes quickly and urgently, asking only that you stay with it.
I knew going into this book that I was going to be laid to waste emotionally. Let's be honest here, this is Corinne Michaels, and well, she's done it to me before. See, the thing about Michaels, though, is that she is good. She just pulls the reader right in with her gorgeous words and her breathtaking story, and then, when you least expect it... she just totally guts you. Mercilessly, unforgivingly, devastatingly. Now, it's not all doom and gloom, so calm down. As savagely as she wields her pen to leave you in tatters, she then waves it like a magic wand to heal you. And the thing to always remember with this author is that the love story and the healing is always worth every minute of the pain.
"I never believed there was freedom in loving someone. I always thought it was like being held captive. I was wrong."
I've read her before, I knew (or at least I thought I did) what I was getting into, and heck, I prepared for this! I was sure I was ready. Well, let me tell you, I was not. I one-clicked, downloaded and opened the book, going into it already knowing that I needed to brace. Not even a chapter in and I was lost in the words, in the story. This is what she does! She draws you in, and I was totally drawn in! And the more I read, the more engrossed I was. I totally got swept up in this sweet and beautiful love story. I was so unprepared for the shock of pain that I felt that I actually cried out. I dropped my Kindle, and I railed at her for the thorough havoc she was wreaking on my poor heart. I had to walk away for a few minutes. I needed time to steel myself for the pain, and as I read through those pages, devouring her words, I ached as if I were there, watching it play out in front of me. I felt so much, I'm not even sure I can adequately capture every emotion I felt while reading this book in this review, so I'm not going to try.
"I've never felt as desperate as I do now... it's out of my hands."
Yes, I know I'm being very vague here, but I'm doing it purposefully because I don't want to spoil anything for another reader. What I will tell you is that this is a gorgeous love story. Wyatt will leave you swooning on your sofa as he rides off your heart. Angie and Wyatt's love story is sweet and sexy and everything that we romance readers want in our love stories. There is pain, oh god is there pain. But think about it -- the best stories, the ones that stay with long after you've finished the book? There is always but always a bit of pain with the pleasure. So I'll tell you that it's worth it. I'll tell you that there is a reason that Corinne Michaels is a best selling author, the woman knows what she is doing, and the fact that this book debuted at #3 on the NY Times Best Seller list is a testament to that. So trust in that and let this story sweep you away. Brilliant, Ms. Michaels, absolutely brilliant.
"My heart has only been one man's--his. I've spent my entire life waiting for him..."
