About the Author

Md. Rezaul Karim is a research scientist at Fraunhofer FIT, Germany. He is also a PhD candidate at RWTH Aachen University, Aachen, Germany. He holds a BSc and an MSc in computer science. Before joining Fraunhofer FIT, he had been working as a researcher at the Insight Centre for data analytics, Ireland. Previously, he worked as a lead engineer with Samsung Electronics' distributed R&D centers in Korea, India, Vietnam, Turkey, and Bangladesh. Earlier, he worked as a research assistant in the Database Lab at Kyung Hee University, Korea, and as an R&D engineer with BMTech21 Worldwide, Korea. Even before that, he worked as a software engineer with i2SoftTechnology, Dhaka, Bangladesh.

He has more than 8 years of experience in the area of research and development, with a solid knowledge of algorithms and data structures in C/C++, Java, Scala, R, and Python-focused big data technologies: Spark, Kafka, DC/OS, Docker, Mesos, Zeppelin, Hadoop, and MapReduce, and deep learning technologies: TensorFlow, DeepLearning4j, and H2O-Sparking Water. His research interests include machine learning, deep learning, semantic web, linked data, big data, and bioinformatics. He is the author of the following book titles with Packt:

Sridhar Alla is a big data expert helping small and big companies solve complex problems, such as data warehousing, governance, security, real-time processing, high-frequency trading, and establishing large-scale data science practices. He started his career as a storage software engineer at Network Appliance, Sunnyvale, and then worked as the chief technology officer at a cyber security firm, eIQNetworks, Boston. His job profile includes the role of the director of data science and engineering at Comcast, Philadelphia. He is an avid presenter at numerous Strata, Hadoop World, Spark Summit, and other conferences. He also provides onsite/online training on several technologies. He has several patents filed in the US PTO on large-scale computing and distributed systems. He holds a bachelors degree in computer science from JNTU, Hyderabad, India, and lives with his wife in New Jersey.

Sridhar has over 18 years of experience writing code in Scala, Java, C, C++, Python, R and Go. He also has extensive hands-on knowledge of Spark, Hadoop, Cassandra, HBase, MongoDB, Riak, Redis, Zeppelin, Mesos, Docker, Kafka, ElasticSearch, Solr, H2O, machine learning, text analytics, distributed computing and high performance computing.

I am a scala enthusiastic, also professional java programmer, now a days im into bigdata stack. I've read the entire book more or less. I would highly recommend this book if someone working in java area but want to write java code in functional (scala) way to solve bigdata problems - scala makes spark processing much easier. I would also recommend this book who is yet to start bigdata coding using scala for spark processing. This book includes a lot of nice, small and real life bigdata analytics problems and how to solve them easily using scala on top of hadoop ecosystem.Thanks to authors for such an useful book - its not just only concepts but also guide to implement concepts.

Fantastic book! I purchased this book yesterday and already read some chapters and had a quick look to other chapters too. It contains everything needed for learning big data analytics with Spark. It elaborately covers the Scala programming, Sparks basic operations, many machine learning algorithms (classification, regression, clustering, recommendation system), NLP, graph analytics, structured streaming, and of course some other advanced topics of Spark such as tuning, debugging and cluster deployment.

More interestingly, it also discussed PySpark, SparkR, Alixuio, and Zeppelin so I don't need to switch to something else. So in summary, it contains everything I was looking for few months.

This is a fantastic book for getting a real understanding about how to develop big data processing applications using Scala and Spark. This book is very up to date containing wide coverage of all the APIs such as Spark SQL, structured streaming, graphX, Spark MLib and more.

This book was really disappointing. I bought it because it seemed like a good introduction to Scala and Spark which is great since Spark is written in Scala, but the book has many errors, specially matching the prose with the code, which changes the name of its variables, classes, objects, etc. out of nowhere. That, and it's repetitive nature that doesn't adds up to build a rich narrative, made it impossible for me to enjoy it or learn much.

As per content pact have inhance their content and user friendly like shroff publisher as pact is now days very progressive. Only topic elaboration of 4-5 lines is not sufficient on any technical term in s/w programming book. And I have returned.

The way the author presented the topics in the book is irritating... All, through the way the explanation needs to be improved a lot, he confuses with the choice of words and terms to be used at a specific situation(for example the explanations in 439&440 pages. I feel like burning the book), it only degrades your interest to study the whole book.... I tried to motivate myself to read the book, but his explanation really irks you and you will definitely feel stopping and taking rest... totally disappointed... More than money, I'm feeling sad for loosing my time invested on this useless irritating book. The whole initial Scala introduction in this book, i skipped and studied from a different book, again for the same reasons above :@:@:@

Waste of money.. tried many times to read this book as I had already purchased it, but failed. This book needs some serious editing - I wonder how it was even published in this form... I do not doubt the knowledge of authors in the book but clearly they're unable to explain even simple stuff in Scala.. They start explaing a concept and halt midway as if they feel it's complete, but it leaves you with more questions than answers as a reader.
This book will not help you in any way stay clear !!
