I'm also one of those people who prefers to keep it natural with my dogs. I feed raw, I don't give heartworm (unless we travel to an area with a high chance of transmission). My dogs are tested annually and neither have heartworm - do your reading! Depending on your area and climate, you may not actually need it!!! So I have a moral dilemma with dosing my dog with insecticides. Wether orally, topically or like this collar. But when it comes down to it, Lyme disease, erlichiosis and babeosis are serious. And ticks don't just like my dogs; they like me too. So I made the decision to use a tick preventative. Now I've tried them all! I've tried frontline and found it to be ineffective...perhaps the new formulation is better. I've tried the seresto collar which cost me about $80 at the vet, but lasts 8 months. That worked perfectly. I tried the scalibor collar, also worked perfectly. I've tried vecta 3D. Worked for one, the other had a severe reaction and is allergic apparently to the active ingredient in that (pyrethroids I believe). I also tried Nexgard for one, the pill. Worked fine, but is a pain to remember to give them every month. So now I'm back to scalibor. Most cost effective and easiest way to ensure tick prevention. Of course with every preventative some dogs will have adverse reactions, and hopefully yours won't be one of them.
After discussions with my vet, he offered me a Scalibor collar the following year. I was completely impressed. After the first day of hunting, I was cleaning out the back of the truck from the dogs. I thought I was cleaning out sand when I realized it was dead ticks. Was very pleased and grateful to know that collars performed incredibly well.
Thankfully, recent years have not had such high levels of tics, but, I get the collars every year without hesitation. It is SOP now and I count on the product to keep the dogs safe / healthy and keep my recreation relaxed and enjoyable. We don't get many opportunities to hunt these days and it is important to me and dogs to make every moment count.
I have found attached ticks, but, very few and always dead. Dogs have never had issues with reaction to collars.
I hesitate to add extra chemicals to the body of my beloved (but elderly) best friend, so last year I bought the Preventic anti-tick collar out of sheer desperation. It worked extremely well for 3 months but for some reason is no longer available. When the collar wore out, and with constant tick problems again, I searched for any professional information online about another product that was safe to use with Revolution.
I finally found Scalibor listed in several European scientific studies. I highly recommend it. Not only has it completely eliminated the tick problem, my girl has experienced no side effects at all while using it with her usual spot-on medication. It seems to be a European product that was only recently introduced to the US, but I'm glad it's here and strongly recommend it to other former Preventic users or those in tick-infested areas. Good luck!
