I just learned about these shampoo brushes recently and while I was skeptical, only after a week in, my scalp and hair are noticeably better and continue to improve.
I have a mild case of seborrheic dermatitis and would get randomly red welts with scaley/dandruff-like patches on my scalp especially around the hairline. I also had a pretty itchy scalp. I just thought I had to live with it but it appears it may have been caused by not rinsing my hair properly and allowing bacteria to grow on my scalp. Enter the shampoo brush...
The brush helps massage the scalp, distribute shampoo evenly and most importantly, scrub away scales and left over shampoo. As mentioned, only after a week, the scales and red welts are gone, my hair is smoother and far less greasy. Amazing results for under $5.
As for the tool itself is pretty basic but feels solid and I can't imagine it breaking even with years of use. Again, well worth the $3-5.
If I had one problem it would be there aren't really any instructions and I couldn't find any good directions online for similar brushes. Here's what I do which seems to be working...
1. Wet hair 2. Lather hair with shampoo 3. Use brush and slick back the hair from front to back making sure to get your entire scalp, around the ears and neck line 4. Rinse shampoo 5. Use the brush again and slick back the hair again without the shampoo to thoroughly clean the shampoo off and scrub the scalp one last time 6. Rinse once more
Being down to my last Goody shampoo brush, I purchased a set of OceanPure shampoo brushes (OceanPure Scalp Shampoo Massage Brushes 3-Pack (Assorted Colors) (Regular)) and a set of the similar Scalpmaster brushes. Here's how they compare: 1) The Goody and OceanPure brushes are look alikes, although the OceanPure handle is molded to the brush rather than attached. Scalpmaster uses a loop handle (see my picture, not theirs). 2) The prongs for the Goody and OceanPure brushes are in circles, whereas for the Scalpmaster brush the prongs are in rows. 3) The Goody prongs are about 1/16" longer than the OceanPure prongs, and about 3/32" longer than the Scalpmaster prongs (i.e., the Scalpmaster prongs are the shortest) 4. The Goody and OceanPure prongs have about the same amount of flex. The Scalpmaster prongs have the most flex (I got the "regular" OceanPure version, not the "soft" OceanPure version).
I've been using Goody shampoo brushes for over 20 years now and they hold up surprisingly well. When they became hard to find in stores, I laid in a small stash of them, of which I'm now down to my last one. I don't know what the durability of the OceanPure and Scalpmaster brushes will prove to be, but the price is low enough that I will be satisfied if for either type I get a year's worth of use. All in all, I think the OceanPure is better suited to my needs since its prongs are a bit longer than for the Scalpmaster and overall it is closer to the Goody design. I also prefer the Goody-style finger hook to the loop used on the Scalpmaster since I think it is easier on your hands.
On a star basis, Goody 5-stars, OceanPure 4-stars, Scalpmaster 3-stars.
I have been dealing with scalp plaque psoriasis for a long time (since I was a teen) and if you have ever had to deal with it, you know what I have been through. I wash my hair and it only seems to make the "flakes" more noticeable, because it releases the scaly skin off my scalp. I have black hair and it is naturally curly and really thick, which makes it hard to get all of the "flakes" out without completely separating the curls and creating an afro! Brushing my hair also scraped off more skin. I am Irish/Welch, so I have large "soft" curls not tight curls.
Anyway... I use this brush in the shower when I have the Just Natural psoriasis shampoo in my hair and the results are simply amazing!!! I also use the conditioner. My scalp was visibly better within just 2 washings, the red bloody sores started to heal and the scaly skin started to sluff off. Within a few weeks, I had almost completely healed. Now, it is not a miracle, I still get build up and have to make sure to really scrub my scalp in the shower, but this brush has had a lot to due with the success.
