Top customer reviews
I don't use the OBDwiz software because I have a different paid for software package I have already been using (Auto Doctor). This sw says that ODBLink interface will work and it does. I tried the sensor graphing real time monitoring function and it works smoothly on the XP laptop.
Not 5 stars because I think the vendor should take a day to document the procedure to manually install drivers on legacy computers (XP etc.) and at least have a PDF application note available on their web site - rather than letting the user go to the FTDI web site and figure it out for himself/herself. I am familiar with the FTDI chip used but if I weren't I'm not sure how long it would have taken me to get drivers installed.
Lots of us keep old laptops to use for things like auto diagnostics. Since this device supports them, it should make it a little easier to do the 1-time installation.
Already used on both my cars (2003 GMC Yukon and a 2002 Nissan Frontier) and it connected to cars system, I only needed it for one (check engine light was on). I love the fact that I dont have to borrow someone else's scanner anymore, or go to the auto parts store and use theirs everytime I need one, which is quite often on my old cars. I recommend this USB ScanTool if you do your own car repairs at home... or would like to just reset car codes (like some reviewers).
The software is a bit strange. It doesn’t come with any user manuals that really walk you through the diagnostic features so you are on your own. If you just need to read codes and clear them it’s easy but for advanced problem solving you will find yourself looking to YouTube for help. The support web site also doesn’t offer much so again you will be surfing for help.
-- How I rate --
5 Stars: Works exactly as advertised, is a good value at the price point purchased, would buy again or recommend to a friend.
4 Stars: Works exactly as advertised, fit/finish are what you'd expect when purchasing this type of product, might have a minor flaw.
3 Stars: Generally works but it may not be a good value at the price point or might like to see changes / improvements.
2 Stars: Barely works but can be made useful if you try.
1 Star: Useless, does not perform its intended function whatsoever and is generally a waste of money, sending it back.
Overall: I am giving this a four star rating based on my criteria above. The cable works great but I really expected a bit more from the software. It seems like many of the features might be offered with an upgrade but I really don’t know where to go to get this initially so they need to work on communication with their customers better via instruction book or something.
I did not know this when i bought it but this scantool also works with Android. I tried it with my phone (ASUS Zenfone 2), with an USB on the Go adapter from Startech.
The android app is called OBDLink and I think its made by Scantool. Its available on google play.
The trick to make it work is to plug in the OBDLink SX into the car OBD port first, and then plug it into the phone, otherwise in might not be recognized by the phone. I think that the phone can`t power the OBDLink SX by itself, so it needs a boost from either the OBD port or a special OTG cable that allows for external 5V power.
The fact that i can use this with Android is great because i do not have to take out my laptop for simple things like reading codes, or checking some generic PIDS.
I have not tried to use this adapter with Torque, or any other Android app.
I might try it out and update at a later time.
