When Joaquin, the owner, shows up and moves into the house he's never seen, the chemistry starts to sizzle between these two. Joaquin is a little taken aback to have a female butler, but her efficiency and her superb cooking quickly impress him. Joaquin is haunted by the death of his older brother 15 years ago from a drug overdose, and his parents abandonment at an early age. With these two events in his past, he hasn't really allowed himself to form any lasting attachments in his life. Shortly after moving into the beach house, his 16 year old half-sister shows up to stay while her parents are away on a short vacation. Essie helps him to see that what he's been missing out on by not being involved with this family and allows Joaquin to fill a little bit of the void left from his brother's death. The attraction between Sara and Joaquin becomes a problem, especially when they become involved on an intimate level.
There are no big mysteries in this book and Ms. Ridgway feeds you bits of information here and there throughout the book as to what Sara's scandal was and why Joaquin is also not looking for public exposure. The real heart of this book are the relationships that Joaquin finds in his path to forgiving himself and his relatives. He can't seem to move forward with loving anyone else until these are resolved. All in all, it was a good book and a fast read. I'm looking forward to Charlie and Emmaline's stories as well.
Why don't we hear more about women working as butler's? I would do it in a heartbeat. I loved the background of this story. I wouldn't want to just be locked into being a Nanny. I now would love to learn more about be a butler.
I found the storyline to be fun. Scandal...well, yes maybe there was or is a scandal. Involved in a divorce scandal her previous employers went through; Sara returns to the states in search of a job. She lands one that gives her the chance to be alone and not involved with people. Except this one has a twist, the owner of the house comes back to hide out.
Trying to be the proper butler and not become to involved kind of backfires on Sara. Fate can be cruel at times and often steps in and takes over. It wasn't as if she went looking to fall in love. But sometimes those second chances to reinvent can be more fun. Reinvent or start over is just what Sara did. Joaquin who owns the property Sara has been fixing up and getting ready comes home to hide.
Sara and Joaquin have that chemistry from the start. The characters are well developed and easy to relate to. I enjoyed there interaction with Joaquin's younger sister and her friends. It made the story seem more realistic. The addition of Sara's friends and Joaquin's mom just added to the story allowing us to feel as if we were also able to experience their HEA.
Can't wait for the next story. Grab your drink, find that comfy spot and settle in for some romance.
Another unexpected surprise from Ms. Ridgway. I can't wait for the next story.
Joaquin is living day by day. Working himself into an early grave. His doctor orders some much needed rest. However there is the stress of a 15 year anniversary coming up. He can not handle the emotions that come the same time every year.
In walks Joaquin's younger sister, Essie. She stays with Joaquin at the villa since she is trying to get to know her older brother. It is nice to see how these two grow their relationship throughout the book. Got to love that teenage angst.
Joaquin holds a lot of guilt about the past, even though he is not at fault.
Sara holds herself prim and proper, well she tries to when she is around Joaquin, but is not always successful. She falls hard for him and fast. She tries her best to deny her feelings.
The two of them are combustible and heat up the pages. They have a fast affair and are instantly attracted to each other. They have their faults and it takes some time to tear down the walls around their hearts, but together they work though it all and find that those wall crumble pretty easily.
I really loved the characters, the story, and the feeling of letting go and moving on. I can not wait to read the next two in series!
