What a fun plant! Growing well - and the animals avoid it and any plants close by. The seller sent it promptly and transported it well. All plants in good condition when received.

These are the least picky plants ever. They will grow bit with minimal water, lots of sun or complete shade, and poor quality clay soil.

They stink like a skunk when you water or disturb them and are sticky to the touch. I got mine at Home Depot about 8 years ago, and since then I've moved twice and easily reestablished them in my new houses from from cuttings. All you need to do is rip off a stem, put in the some dirt, and it will start growing from there.

They have a skunky smell and are sticky. I don't know about repelling dogs, but if you have issues with vagrants sleeping on the side of your building, this will deter them.

While they need very little water, they do best with water or rain about every 10 days, and in good soil and 3 times a week watering, will spread very vast and grow about 15 inches high. I have never had one die. And least in SoCal, they produce the purple flowers all year round. The dead leaf litter is a minor issue to clean up every 6 months or so if you want to keep them looking at their best.

I have a few growing out of cinder blocks into big bushy plants.

They are attractive to look at too, with leaves that stay green for a long time and long-lasting purple flowers.

There is a related speies that looks and smells very close, but the leaves are a lighter green and the small is fainter. They are less hardy but still pretty tough plants and a bit more attractive to look at.

If you do ending up buying these, just get one. With a bit of watering early on and spreading them by bracking branches, you can have 10 times the amount you started with in just 3 months.

I puchased this plant in the hope that it would keep stray pitbulls and large house cats out of my yard and gardens. This plant worked great! Since the first day I sat it on my patio all the neighborhood dogs and cats stayed out of my yard. It was such a relief to be able to just bounce out the door without being leary of someones animal in my driveway or patio, sitting there growling at me as if I were the intruder. However, it snowed last night and I noticed the frost and snow killed my plant. Pity I did not bring it in before the weather and temperature change. This plant is an annual and does not survive cold fall and winter temperatures. I will be ordering another of these next summer. If I can find some seeds, I will start some plants, in the house, over the winter months. I have plenty of sunny window space to accommodate a new planting. This plant really works and is very reasonably priced. I would definately recommend it as a deterent to strays invading you space.

I ordered one Coleus canina plant to deter cats from our flower garden. (The plant is said to work for cats and rabbits as well as for dogs.) Unfortunately it did not, and does not, work, and I had to find other methods to deter those pesky feral cats. To be fair, though, this plant arrived healthy and has grown astonishingly well, outpacing even the fast-growing mint that I had planted in the same pot. I was able to propagate about a half dozen new plants from the parent plant. Perhaps if the plant keeps growing and propagating, I could form a continuous barrier around my garden, and that would work better to keep the cats out??

I don't know about the other animals but this has worked for cats. I had several stray and neighborhood cats that are ruining my flowerbeds. So I bought just one plant to see if it worked. It is hard to believe but it does. They have continued to disturb the areas where I have not yet put one of these plantst. But at the entrance to my back door where I always have an array of beautiful summer flowers in potted plants, they have left the plants alone. When the plant arrived, it was very small and I wondered if it was large enough to work. But I just set it in the pot it arrived in, inside another clay pot with dirt and since then, none of the other plants have been disturbed. The area is about 10 by 10 but it has worked. I know it is supposed to have a larger range than that but my yard is broken up into several smaller areas that prevent me from taking advantage of the over all distance this plant is to cover. So for now, I am not able to address the distance that this plant is able to effect. It has been a couple months and the plant has grown but still no trouble with cats coming and nesting in my potted plants. This plant is a miracle worker. I am going to order one for my front yard, for the terraced area along my drive way and for my terraced area in my back yard. The cats come and dig holes and make a mess. I can straighten up after them and turn around the next morning and they will have come right behind me and messed it up again. It is one crazy world when you can't get your city to come do anything about the stray cat problem but if you were to do harm to the cat, they will sure come after you. One crazy world when an animal has more rights than a human being.
