- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2022This is an important and highly readable book about how adverse life experiences during childhood, including infancy and even the prenatal state, can affect us later in life in terms of our emotional state, social function, and biomedical disease. It will be a very meaningful read in terms of understanding one’s own state, in terms of how to become a truly good parent, and in terms of improved professional understanding and function for those working in medicine, psychology, and the social fields including police and the judiciary.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2013This book was well researched and written in a way that helped me understand my "roots". ....and it's ties with my middle age illnesses. It all started in utero with a pregnant stressed-out, unmarried 17 year old and was re-enforced with a stay in the hospital eye surgery) as a 4 year old with parents unable to stay over the many nights I was there. This book is great for health care professionals and teachers, etc so that they may better understand the children with issues.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2014I knew that stress/trauma was at the root of my health issues. Doctors viewed my chronic stress as a mental issue that had little or nothing to do with actual physical disease. Finally the medical community is coming around. In spite of what I knew, this book taught me a lot more. But, the most important thing I gained was a new perspective.
With as little detail as possible: I adore my husband but he has wanted a divorce for over two years. (We have been separated most of this time.) I had resisted. Then I read this book and realized that no matter how much I love him he is not the right person for me. In 10 years we lived in three states and had so many challenges that your head would spin. He thrives on changes and challenges. I stress. I want/need a stable, rather dull, quiet life :-) I finally was able to start looking at what I truly need and how to "take care" of myself.
I like the approach the author uses. As infants and young children who are traumatized, we are victims, yet it (trauma) is not the real focus for those over 40. It is how that trauma will surface 40 or 50 years later as predictable diseases.
Author Robin Karr-Morse has much to say towards the end of the book about raising children today that I hope more people will embrace. Ms. Karr-Morse is a great writer in that she really presents the scientific research without the book being too technical and it is anything but dry. It has a very balanced feel to it that I appreciated.
I highly recommend this book to everyone. If blessed by a loving, functional family, this book will give you insights into those not as fortunate as yourself and answer why they act/react the way they do when stress overwhelms them. If, like so many people, you come from a dysfunctional background, I believe you will gain insights into how to treat yourself more gently, how to better raise your children or grandchildren, and how to make a difference in the lives of those you love.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2014I gave it 4 stars because in the end it might actually be traumatizing to read it. At the end of the book there is sort of a description of how to get help with trauma, but in the text, as they make the case for the connection between physical illness and trauma, there was much less talk about how much of this dysregulation can be healed now.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2012Karr-Morse and Wiley very effectively share current research regarding the effect of stress and trauma on our youngest children. As a school psychologist I feel that this book fills an important gap in understanding children and have recommended it to my friends and colleagues. Scared Sick provides compelling information for making big changes in how we think of infants and toddlers and what supports they need to thrive. This book also provides strong support for parent education. This is an excellent book and should be read by everyone 12 years and older!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2015This a both academic review of all the research that has been done on the effects of childhood trauma and how this trauma follows into adulthood causing many disease. The book is thorough and compelling. I learned so much and didn't realize how sensitive even a infants brain and nervous system is to their surroundings. A must read for parents and anyone who is looking into their own trauma and how it might be causing both physical and mental health issues.

I can hardly find the words to convey what an excellent book this is, so relevant, easy to access, clearly explains and evidences what many of us are trying hard to share in the world about how vital a child's earliest moments are even before they enter this World. A book I will be reading, referring too and quoting from for ever and everywhere.

Excellent book linking impacts of attachment trauma / wounding in childhood and adult illness. Great chapters on genetics and epigenetics as well as Pre and perinatal trauma. She even has a chapter on ways to lessen impact of trauma on children through the divorce process. I'd recommend to psychotherapists to add to your collection especially if you are a mind/body therapist or curious about attachment trauma's later impacts.
