"No one in this life walked around scarless."
Scarless & Sacred tells us not only Theo's story but also explains a lot of history for both DeLuca brothers. History that makes your heart hurt. A history that connects him to the other families of the Outfit. Connections that continually put Evelina Conti in his path.
This story is my favorite of the Chicago War series. Previously reading about Theo, I wondered what his deal was. He has a quiet air of arrogance. Scarless & Sacred blew my mind. There is so much more to Theo than I could have imagined. His history along with his present including Evelina made for a steaming hot story. The two together are amazing. The Chicago war kicks up in intensity going unimaginable places. You just need to read it.
Thank you, Bethany-Kris. This series continues to amaze. I can't wait for the finale book.
I received an ARC for an honest review.
Eve was the biggest surprise. Yes she's been born and raised in a made family. She knows what's expected of her and how to handle things, to always fall in line without asking questions. She may seem weak from the outside, but she's strong willed and fierce. Eve is willing to do what's right and protect those she cares for. She's also no body's pushover. I loved the way took every chance available to her to escape from the prison she was in, even if I was astonished when she took the initiative. I loved how she was with Theo. Regardless of how she felt about things, she never pushed or prodded him for anything and I loved the way she was up front with him about everything.
Theo was quite a surprise too. I wasn't expecting to like him as much as I did, especially since what I'd learned about him from previous books hadn't been very flattering. In this book, my perception and understanding of him really changed. Yes, Theo made bad choices, but when the time came, he really stepped up for those who mattered to him. It showed in his attitude towards being in the Outfit and what it meant to him. And I absolutely loved the way he was with Lily, his sister and for his family. I had no idea of the horrors Theo had experienced or the lengths he went to make sure no one else knew and others were protected. Theo was the keeper of secrets, some his own and those of others, which made the burden on his shoulders heavier.
I think this is the first book in The Chicago War series I haven't cried while reading. I feel like that's significant and deserves a separate mention. It's not because the book didn't engage me emotionally, but because I was I was too engrossed to. Allow me to explain. While Scarless & Sacred focuses on the developing relationship between Eve and Theo, the drama of the Outfit and power plays are happening around them. There was so much happening, by the time I'd processed what I'd read and tried to figure out what it meant, I was already trying to wrap my head around the next plot twist, of which there were many. I've got to say that at no time was I able to fully predict what was going to happen next. I was literally on edge the entire time I was reading the book.
I enjoyed the peek into the Marcellos, another organized crime series from Bethany-Kris that I haven't read yet, but want to. I think my favorite thing about the book besides Theo and Eve are the plot developments that happened; I think this book is my favorite in the series for that alone. Nothing is as it seems, not the past, not the present, and certainly not the future of the Outfit in Chicago. Like I mentioned before, a lot is happening. I love how each book has built up on the one before it, and I can't tell you how eager I am for the next book because I can't wait to see how Bethany-Kris outdoes herself.
This entry in the Chicago War series opens up with Evelina's eighteenth birthday party. And we see how she is (much like the other female characters) anxiously watching to see who her father decides she should be married to. She has a hidden moment with Theo DeLuca that sparks her interest.
Flash forward a few years and my how things have changed! The war brewing between the families keep changing the landscape of the Outfit. Marriages keep happening and alliances keep shifting. Evelina has broadened her horizons and now that she is older and wiser her paths begin to intersect with Theo's more often and the tension is so thick you could cut it with a knife. The push and pull between these 2 characters is fiery she wants to challenge him at every turn and he enjoys taunting her and pushing her buttons! It makes them an enigmatic couple that's for sure!
They are snarky and try their hardest to deny their attraction but then all of the events start to take their toll on Theo and he needs Evelina more than he initally thought. What I love about these love stories is the blend between action filled scenes and the quiet simple moments. You can have a explosion or a attempted murder and in a few pages later be having this sweet romantic moment. the dialogue between the characters even when the stakes are the highest are some of the best moments when they lay it all out on the line because if you live in this life you never know which moment could be your last so you don't want to leave anything unsaid. I thought this was a Excellent continuation of a proven series!
