I wish I could give this a higher rating, I really do. It wasn't a bad book and the author has talent and potential, and I would be willing to try her future work. But I had some issues with this book. First, the positives:

-interesting premise that's a fairly unique twist on the post-apocalyptic genre
-atypical take on vampires
-Sloane can be pretty badass as a heroine without it seeming too over the top
-there's some good, exciting action packed and tension filled scenes
-racially diverse characters, which is very nice to see
-very few grammar mistakes or typos

-lukewarm romance, despite me liking the hero. The hero wasn't the problem, it was the way the romance was written. There was not enough real progression considering this is a trilogy, a bit of missing chemistry, and it came off as too childish for 17-20 year olds.
-there's a twist that I saw coming but I felt the reveal wasn't done well, and we didn't learn enough about the character it involved before it happened that justified it.
-not enough interactions between key characters and not enough backstory provided for some key characters. There's a lot of time spent on things that could have been shortened.
-it takes Sloane way too long to start trusting anyone. She sees things as too black and white for much of the book, when it should be obvious there's a lot more grey. It gets frustrating.

I wouldn't discourage anyone from trying the book out, I just couldn't give it a higher rating than this, but that's my personal opinion. Others do and probably will feel differently.

There are a lot of great indie authors. Long gone is the notion that indie authors were somehow inferior because they weren¡¦t backed by the big boys. Some traditional publishers have to be kicking themselves for missing talents like E.L. James and Amanda Hockings.

Here is another fine example of a talented writer whose story is better than some books you find in mainstream bookstores.

Vampires, I love them. I¡¦ve read everything from the classic vampire story to ones that sparkle, ones that don¡¦t need blood, to ones like this. What is this.? Well I can¡¦t tell you because that would spoil the fun. But I like to say that this story is a mix of dystopian and paranormal. Nice, right. Yes.

Okay, characters. Sloan is a tough girl in a tough situation. Instead of seeing a weak girl become strong. We dive into a story where a strong girl becomes vulnerable. Notice I didn¡¦t say weak, because she was never weak.

The storyline simply put without giving much away is predator becomes prey and learns what that means and how that will change her life.

There are twists in the story that in passing may have crossed my mind, but with all that was going on, there was enough distraction to keep me guessing.

Do I recommend? Do I recommend, yes. I like this one a lot. So much I went looking for the sequel. ¼ It¡¦s not out yet. No, the cliffhanger wasn¡¦t terrible, but it did make you want more.

We meet Sloane a 17 year old girl, who lost part of her family a year back, in a series of unfortunate events. Her twin Orion is presumed dead, killed by Vampires on hallows eve; she starts a quest that will change her life forever.
This book as a whole has a lot of potential, the plot is good but still has some weak spots here and there, the description of the characters is amazing, but sometimes it doesn't agrees with what the characters actually do. The side characters are likeable but aren't explored enough.

The prose is good and the plot is very entertaining and even though the general concept of the book has been done any number of times, Krystle's has uniqueness.

Other thing I found is that at times the author tells instead of shows information, but this issue can also be fixed and even though it's somewhat distracting it doesn't lessen the overall impact of the story.
I loved the fact that Slone isn't the damsel in distress type, she is certainly able to fend for herself, but still accepts the fact that she can't do everything on her own. She is a strong character and some of her comeback lines are simply amazing.
Aden is still kind of an unknown to me, he is the male lead on this book, and I feel he could have been developed a little further; but still is quite endearing; he has this kind of man/boy feel to him that is quite catching. Between you and me, sometimes I even drooled a little over him, lol!!!

The best part of this book is the villain, I definitively didn't see that one coming, the fact that the author managed to go through the story without leaving so much of a hint of who he is, was astonishing.

All in all this is a very interesting book, that just needs a little polishing here and there but it certainly has the basis for an epic series.

Oh my Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood! This book is amazing! Why does it only have 600 ratings?! Like what?!

I have read so many cliché vampire books in the past few years, it's past the point of being funny. So I'll admit that I was super-mega-ultra skeptical to pick up another one.

But this is the real deal, guys. This PERFECTION.

Before I get into all this, let me just say that the mere mentioning of Pittsburgh made me love this author ten times more. Like YES. Nobody ever picks Pittsburgh for dystopias, let alone a vampire dystopia.

Anyway, back to the book. So the main premise here is that approximately three years before the novel begins, an event called the Eclipse took place, and vampires basically led a full-fledged feeding frenzy (say that five times fast hehe) on the human population. After it was declared that the existence of vampires was an immediate threat to the remaining humans, our society roped off specified areas called White Sectors, where humans could live without the fear of being constantly tracked by feral blood-sucking monsters. Ain't nobody wantin' Bella Swan to eat their face off.

I've gotta say...I'm really starting to like this fusion of vampire and dystopia that's going on in YA literature right now. It's new and refreshing, with so many potential plot twists that haven't been explored yet.

As most of you know, I'm a huge fan of kick-ass female lead characters (as you can probably tell from the appropriately named bookshelf), so I fell in love with Sloane from the very first page.
