Kelly Ward had a hard life... she grew up having suffered horrific abuse as an adopted child, that the only thought she had was to escape... and go to university. She thought she found the right man to escape to... Until he turned out to be a psychopath that relished hurting her for two years. She barely survived the attack that finally put him in jail... but his powerful father got the sentence reduced to only two years (instead of attempted murder, he got felony assault). He promised to kill her... slowly. So she changed her name, changed her looks, and change her town... and her career... exotic dancer at night, as Chole Green. She needed to save her money and chase her dream to become a teacher. She can't fall for any of the lecherous men who came to ogle her.... Until Derek Stark came. He is rich, he is handsome, he's not the kind of man who visits a pole-dancing club, but he wanted Chloe. Why is he here? As Chloe and Derek got closer, they discovered each other's secrets... just before her abuser is about to be released... and determined to finish what he started...
This is a multi-volume set at almost 700 pages, and overall it *is* a good read, but there were various bits that were raised, but didn't feel it was resolved properly, such as various lawsuits, or threat of lawsuits. There is also a big problem with the antagonist that didn't make any sense.
Unfortunately, I'll have to spoil a certain part of the story to explain the problem.
YOU'VE BEEN WARNED
Anyway, Kelly/Chloe's stalker / ex is called Jesse, whose father was the state attorney general. Jesse is a psychopath who relied on his parents to "clean up" his messes. He was in law school when he met Kelly in university, and he convinced her to move out of her parent's place (of abuse) and move in with him. For six months he's good, then he got jealously possessive and started smacking her around. At 2 years, when he's about to graduate and join a prestigious lawfirm, he tried to kill her for talking to a neighbor, and he was arrested and spent 2 years in jail. Upon release, he spent all his money and time to stalk her and hurt people around her. Somehow, instead of a lawyer in training who spent 2 years in jail, he is now a master criminal with ability to steal cars, sabotage cars, stalking, and other things. WHEN did he LEARN those skills? In jail? WTF?
Also, Jesse sabotaged Chloe/Kelly's boyfriend's car. The story was he drained all the brake fluid onto a towel so he didn't leave a puddle. The driver (whose wife died in a car accident) was extremely careful, yet the way he crashed was they managed to drive up a hill, and only discovered they had no brakes when they started going downhill. This makes NO technical sense for SEVERAL reasons. 1) Any car that had brake fluid drained would have flashed brake failure warning light as soon as the car was started. The idea that the driver did not have to use his brakes EVEN ONCE before reaching top of a hill is ridiculous. 2) Handbrakes were on a separate system and is usually manually operated. 3) Also, even with no brakes, it is possible to engage engine braking by shifting to a lower gear and it's possible to sacrifice the car's body by scraping the barriers or the wall to slow down even further. The idea that a man, who had his father in law in the car, had suffered loss of wife in a car accident, and is a very careful driver, missing the warning light, NEVER used brakes until he needed it, and failed to use engine braking and other techniques to save themselves, is just utterly ridiculous.
These two major plot holes, along with a couple typos and editing errors made it hard to give this book a higher rating. The ending was also drawn out too far. What should have been a 75 page conclusion was somehow stretched to 150 pages for an extra book in the set. While I do recommend this set, it could use a bit more editing and fact-checking.
OMG! This new author is making her debut with an explosive read! This story is brilliantly written, its intense, intriguing and has you gripped from the get go its just so good that it is hard to put into words! I will warn you that it ends on a cliffhanger which will have you gasping in outrage as you are left staring at the to be continued wording with an evil glare in your eye because you are desperate to find out what happens next! It is not a story I would say for sensitive readers as it covers themes of a darker nature such as abuse even from a child hood age also domestic abuse later on in the life of Chloe the main character. But it is all handled with thought and care and written to a very high standard. The story is detailed to such an amazing degree that you can visualise yourself there in the thick of it all. It really is a good story and I am now desperate to read the next instalment. Chloe deserves to find happiness especially after all she has gone through and she deserves to be loved, and Derek seems the perfect kind of Mr Wonderful, right for the job of being her man, the one she deserves but is it going to be that easy after all she has gone through so far, I am with you desperate to know but living in eternal hope that these two will come out together stronger than ever and form a bond that is unbreakable! This author is definitely going to be one to be added to my must read list if all her others works are as good as this initial one. She is definitely one to watch! I hope that you enjoy this read as much as I did! Happy Reading!
Scarred - Book 2 -
Amazing! This story quickly picks back up from where we were left with bated breath at the conclusion of book one and I could not put it down. We find out about the likeness to Chloe in the picture and her and our suspicions are realised. She still is having a hard time to trust people and let them in but she soon realises that she may not have a choice. When instincts kick in and her actions draw attention to her she has no choice but to confide some information to her boss Roxi and house mate Lexi who are probably the closest people to friends that Chloe actually has aside from her friend who is her only connection to her previous life. Then there is another who would love for her to let him in. The ever patient Derek who is soon to be realised by the both of them as each other's true love if all goes as I hope. But before we get to that point poor Chloe has a lot to work through, her lack of trust and wanting to keep all at a distance is still a huge factor it seems for every step Derek makes he takes another two back but knowing who she is and how he feels he knows she is worth all of this patience that he is giving and definitely worth the wait however long that maybe. She doesn't realise it yet but she can trust him and even if her heart tells her so, her mind is a lot stronger than what it used to be and takes a little more persuasion. So with these new feelings being on her mind, the fact that Jesse will be released soon and without a doubt she knows he will come for her she has to try to make sense of her feelings and thoughts and deal with other situations that come along that show that the life she has always known may not have been the life she should of had at all. With so many questions and feelings to deal with, but the fabulous Chloe is the perfect matchmaker for her friend Lexi and Brock who definitely need their own little romance and HEA told once we get Chloe and Derrick sorted out, who knows even Roxie and the other club members could have a story to tell, this author has created a lot of potential with her story and I cannot wait to see where she takes it. This story seems like an addiction you cannot put it down nor do you want to until you have finished it and are immediately thirsty for the next installment. If this is the standard that this amazing author has for her initial debut story told over parts and they are all this standard in the future we are all in for a treat and I cannot wait to see what else this imaginative and thoughtful writer will come up with next! Happy Reading!
Scarred - Book 3 -
WOW ...WOW ..... and WOW !!!! What can I say this debut series by this amazingly talented author just keeps getting better and better with every turn of the page the story goes from strength to strength. She has written this story in parts so I would suggest that you read them all in order to appreciate and understand the story in all its glory. Well we are now at the point where Chloe realises that she does trust the wonderful Derek. The poor guy doesn't know what to do when she initially runs from the party with a fear in her eyes that he would never want to see there again after she bumped into Jesse's father Vince. After he manages to convince her to let him take her somewhere away from all the prying eyes and to let them talk she realises that the trust she was unsure she had in him is true, she really does trust him as much as she can anyone. Knowing this after so long of taking care of herself and bottling up all of her emotions the flood gates finally open and she spills every secret she ever had to the one man who is now slowly stealing her heart. He is stunned, shocked and sickened but also amazed at the inner strength that this beautiful woman before him has. This story is written so well, and handles some tough subjects such as abuse, in childhood and domestic, also emotions about adoptions and fear of the man who she knows is coming for her to torment her all over again. It is all written with thought and care, and handle with a respect and level of emotion that each of these delicate subjects warrants and deserved. This author should be applauded for that alone. But on top of that this series is developing a deep incredible story that draws you in and hooks you with every turn of the page. It really is an incredible read and worth the tense wait between each publication. I really cannot recommend this story / series highly enough and and also have added this author to my must read list. If all her works are to this standard we are all in for a definite treat! Happy Reading!
Scarred - Book 4 -
OMG! What can I say aside from that! This debut series by this incredibly talented author goes from strength to strength! Each page has your pulse racing and has you on the edge of your seat as you follow Chloe on her tale of hope, love and rebuilding her life over again after the evil Jesse tried to destroy her in more ways than one. But the fates are cruel and are clearly not done with their torture of the beautiful Chloe, as soon as she receives a blessing in one instance or form it is cruelly turned to tragedy in another form. She is a dealt a rough hand and I feel for her character and long for the day that justice is given to her and Jesse gets what he so rightly deserves, hopefully delivered to him by Chloe herself! I wished this book was as long as the others in the series so far but that is just me and my thirst for this story to never end. Hopefully as the story reaches its conclusion so will the nightmare that is Chloe's life and she can eventually have her own happy ending with the one meant to be hers.
Scarred - Book 5 -
Part five of this fantastic series and still the author continues to keep us all on the edge of our seat with the action, passion and suspense. Now Chloe and Derek have spent time with the Whitemores and the DNA results are in. When Chloe just starts to find her happiness and feel her life starting to take her on a journey of happiness that she thought she could never have. But once again a happiness that she deserves more than words can say is brutally ripped away from her just before she can grasp it! Jesse is still tormenting her and now she feels it is time to end this nightmare for ever. The story although deals with sensitive issues of violence and abuse but I felt they were told with thought, care and respect as have all the other books in this amazing debut series by this talented author. It shows the inner strength of this amazingly brave woman who deals with her past and present and is desperately trying to embrace her future and future relationships with people that she thought she could never have within her life. The passions and emotions in this story are heart warming and also heart breaking at times but throughout it all it is all dealt with with a care and respect that these subjects rightly deserve. I loved every moment of this story and cannot recommend it highly enough. Happy Reading!
Scarred - Book 6 -
The final part in this amazing series and in truth I am saddened to see it come to an end. For a debut book this would of been amazing but for an entire series to be constantly the same caliber of writing, feelings and emotions throughout for a new author shows just how talented Kylie Walker truly is and that she is definitely an author to watch. So for the final part of Chloe's journey that she herself never thought she would make it to we see her enjoy the feeling of freedom, not having to constantly look over her shoulder an action most of us take for granted without a second thought. The feeling of being part of a family and being able to embrace life and also the realization that she can be happy even with all of her history and scarring they are all a part of her and what makes her the strong woman that she has become. Absolutely brilliant no other words can describe my feelings for this book and this series as a whole. Although some of the subject matters are not for everyone they are handled with thought and care and I cannot recommend this author highly enough. If you have not read these books already you are missing out. Happy Reading!
For starters, the point-of-views switched between third-person - both limited & omniscient - and first-person in a few places, there was pronoun transposition (he when it should have been she, etc.), & grammatical errors abound. There were a couple of grammatical errors which made it difficult to decipher the sentences. The last few chapters could have been left out altogether, in my opinion. They felt rushed as if trying desperately to give the readers an ending to the story that we didn't necessarily need.
There were two specific intimate scenes that felt very out of place with the story. I've read my share of each of the softer and hardcore intimate scenes within various stories and writing styles. These particular scenes felt as though someone else wrote them or the writer was trying too hard to be "shocking" or "naughty" to get through to the reader the intensity of the exchange between the characters.
I didn't hate the story, but I can't say that I will recommend it to a friend.
