The title "Tribal Scarring" comes from when Billy is looking to provide for his family hunting kangaroos and one of them scratches him. The approach of Billy's family to the wound is so separate from the modern reaction that is serves as a perfect example of something that takes a child out of their modern environment and to one that many North American children will never come close to experiencing.
Taaffe's series is a wonderful action series for boy and girls who don't mind a little grit in their stories.
"You be OK," Cobar tried to reassure him, but he could see Billy's panic rising and added quickly, "plus you get good Tribal scarring for your initiation ceremony - we do it now the spirit of the Red Kangaroo has claimed you. It will be your totem, Billy. You will be man now!"
Billy and his clan prepare him for manhood and his "walkabout" in which he will learn about himself, the land and his culture and even other cultures. Young readers will enjoy learning about life in this native land of Australia. This is also a great series for reluctant readers and also for readers looking for an adventure outside of the norm.

This guy is a very good writer and this book is a thoroughly enjoyable read. I can't wait to read the rest of the books in this series and see how he develops the plot and the characters.
Billy has now left the clan and is now embarking on his "walkabout" and I am a little worried about him. Funny how a well written story can make you feel intensely about it's characters.
