If you're a fan of TORTURED ALPHA MALES, then you'll fall in love with this book's hero! OMG. His past is utterly HEART-BREAKING!!! But it was also incredibly HEART-WARMING to watch him fall in love after everything he'd been through! The story became surprisingly INTENSE towards the end with quite a twist! And it wrapped up in a gorgeous, romantic epilogue! This is a definitely a new favorite and it's a complete standalone so be sure to grab a copy! - Aestas Book Blog

I received an ARC for an honest review.
So this doesn't happen often, but there are rare occasions when I read a book, especially one that I just happened upon, that I almost shudder to think, what would have happened if I never read this book. I'm not trying to be dramatic, however I never read anything by this author, but the title got me. So, I applied for the advanced reviewers copy.
I am so glad I got it!
Emma and Aiden have a very interesting beginning. I won't tell any details. It's rare that a book takes me off guard and on a compelling journey from
chapter one, but this book is one of them.
About a quarter through this book my heart melts when I see how Aiden and Emma really see eachother. It's not lust, it's soul deep love in the making. By half way through I am in love with this couple.
They have so much to over come, but love like theirs, it's worth everything!
After tragically losing both of her parents in the space of a year, 20-year-old Emma Cooper is carrying out her mother’s last wishes by seeking out a man named Aiden Sheffield, and travelling with him to the small town of Linx in Texas to scatter her ashes. She has no idea who Aiden is or how he is linked to her mother, but she is determined to keep the promise she made. When she travels to Oregon to find Aiden, he is far from what she was expecting. She assumed he would be a past love of his mother’s, but instead he turns out to be a handsome young man that instantly sets Emma’s heart racing. But far from being welcoming, he is a broody a**hole who appears to want nothing to do with her.
Aidan is the hot-guy-romance-hero trifecta – he’s an ex-SEAL, an MMA fighter, and he runs a dog shelter (*swoon*). So from that alone we know he’s tough and strong with a heart of gold. His attraction to Emma is as immediate as hers is for him, but he resents her coming into his carefully constructed life and reminding of a past he has worked so hard to overcome. But he shares some of his past with her, and after she ends up staying at his ranch with him for a few days and he spends some time with her, he knows there is no way that he can allow her to return to the town that almost destroyed him, so he agrees to go with her.
Road trip! I freaking love road trip books! There is something about the experiences of travelling, and the intensity of two people being together all day every day that creates a wonderful set up for a romance. Add in the ridiculous chemistry that sizzles between Emma and Aiden, and the stage is set for some awesome fireworks!
I absolutely loved the relationship between these two. Yes, there is darkness and drama, but there is also a fantastic sense of fun, and the teasing, flirting and banter is sensational! The story is written in dual POV so we get to see where both of them are at, and I loved the opportunity to get inside of their heads – experiencing the light and the not-so-light moments right along with them. The emotion between them builds quickly but realistically, and I could feel each little shift in their relationship, and I loved every fun, passionate moment of it! From reluctant allies to friends to lovers, their open acceptance of each other, and of all that happens between them, is absolutely beautiful to read.
But their road trip is leading them down a dark path, and as they slowly fall for each other, Aiden starts to open up about his past and all that he has been through, and it is absolutely heartwrenching. This book has some incredibly dark themes and it’s not always an easy read. It’s graphic and disturbing, and there are definitely some triggers to be aware of (physical and emotional abuse of both children and adults), but it’s written with heart and emotion, and it really allows you to understand all that Aiden has been through and how much he has overcome. My heart ached for him, and it made him all the more incredible for being able to open himself up to Emma so completely.
And that darkness that haunts Aiden so deeply becomes all too real as they reach their destination. Will they be strong enough to face the horrors of the past head-on, or will it destroy them and all that they have managed to build together?
I loved this book. It’s a heart-pounding ride, and the blend of dark drama and sweet, fun, chemistry-filled, sexy romance is really well done. Emma and Aiden are wonderful characters, and their journey – both literal and figurative – is beautifully written. My heart ached for them and all that they went through, and I feel like I experienced it all alongside them as they deal with the past, experience the present, and move towards their future.
I wasn’t ready to let these characters go, but the book ends in a great place, and I finished this book with a huge grin on my face.
However, the story did touch me. That a child endures the abuse Aiden did, is heartbreaking. That the abuse continues even after it is reported by a teacher, doesn't ring true however. I recently retired from the profession and can attest to the requirements in place by law to protect children in schools who are identified as being abused or even the suspicion of such.
Not as simple as Ms Schiller paints. It would have been incumbent upon the coach to report directly to CPS. Therefore, I can't give stars that indicate the book is all that. I see that the true depiction would not have propelled her narrative though.
Harlan is an evil character, truly. But researching to make the story realistic would be how Ms Schiller could have taken the story to 5 stars.
I'm not the author but I expect my books to have realism - even when the genre is romance.
This story... Emma & Aiden's story... it's intense. It pulled me in from the start and wouldn't let go. I put off going for coffee so I could finish. (If you know me, you know very few things get in the way of my coffee!) The things Aiden goes through... heartbreaking. Seriously, be prepared because your heart will ache. Grab the tissues. Extra tissues if you're an animal lover. There will be tears - but not all of them are sad, I promise!
The way the story is crafted, not only the romance and relationship between these tow, but the complete history and solid-ness of each character, is a beautiful thing. This was a very different story than I was expecting, but did not disappoint! Emma is strong, she is fierce, and she does NOT give up. Aiden is amazing - he has his a-hole moments, but he is quick to shed them. And his protectiveness, his heart... You will fall in love right alongside Emma. : )
I will say that there is possible triggers in this book, with that being said I liked how the author approached them. It was heart felt and true, not tacky and made to sound like a joke.
I’ve never read this author before, but I am going to say I am impressed and can’t wait to read more books from her!!

Emma Cooper has recently lost both her father, a fireman killed in duty and her mother due to cancer. Her mother’s last wish was for Emma to look up an Aiden Shffield and the two of them scatter her ashes in a small town that her mother had lived in. Emily finds Aiden, a young man not much older than herself, but he’s not at all pleased when she introduces herself and tells him about her mother’s request. In fact he is downright rude to her.
But he knows how brutal the town of Linx Texas is and his conscience kicks in and he very reluctantly agrees to accompany her, with a few conditions. Thus begins a road trip during which he slowly and very reluctantly tells her of his story with her mother. And what he tells her rocks her world.
I found both Emma and Aiden such well developed but sad characters. It hadn’t been that long since Emma lost her parents and she is still reeling from her loss. She also lost her home because of horrendous medical bills. She is unemployed and she had had to drop out of school. But despite this she is a very warm and caring young woman. Maybe because I went through a series of tragedies myself a number of years ago when I lost both my job and my husband of 32 years I could relate to Emma. Despite the sadness life goes on and we have to adjust to our new realities.
And reading Aiden’s story is heartbreaking. He was raised by a monster, a true monster. Emma’s mother had been his step mother for a while. Because of so many painful memories of Linx, Aiden really does not want to go but he needs to make sure Emma will be OK and not taken by the monster that abused him for so many years. Seldom have I read a book with such an evil person. A bit of a warning for those thinking of reading this book. The torture he puts Aiden through is quite vividly written and tough to get through in parts.
But come through it Aiden does and despite where he came from he is such a warm, caring and beautiful man. He helps operate a dog shelter and it’s a perfect place for him to be.
While on their road trip, Emma and Aiden come to care for each other and then feelings deepen even further.
This is such a wonderful and emotional book. I was awed when I read the author couldn’t even speak English when she first found herself in the US and I found it even more amazing that she has learned how to write so very well. I’ve since purchased another book she has written and I can see myself rereading this one again since it’s one of those books that I found hard to put down and rushed through it wanting to see how it ended. Now I need to go back and savour it more slowly. I’m very pleased to recommend this book.
