Kazuo Umezu, Scary Book vol. II: Insects (Dark Horse, 2003)

Insects is the second American Kazuo Umezu release, this time a single story, "Butterfly Grave." Megumi, a young woman with a phobia of butterflies, is haunted with visions of a black butterfly that are always followed by tragedy. In order to save herself and those around her, Megumi needs to face and understand her fear of butterflies, as well as the events surrounding the mysterious suicide of her mother when Megumi was only a toddler.

It's relatively interesting stuff, and those who were put off by the predictability of Reflections may find that their persistence with the series is rewarded here. (A character from Reflections also makes a great cameo here, suggesting that perhaps there's a story arc to be found in the larger series.) Umezu seems to have gotten the thematic feet of the series under him, and Insects seems to have a stronger sense of direction than Reflections did. An improvement over the series' first book, and worth your time. *** ½

Great story that ties together nicely. The drawing are full of charm. Scary without having to resort to being gory.
