Wow! I guarantee most people will not have heard a disc like this before. The Machaut is sublime, gritty, unexpected and just excellently performed here by the Orlando Consort.

However it's Tarik O'Regan's 'Scattered Rhymes', which opens the disc that will blow you away. For one thing it's FAST, something which most new choral music is not. For this piece, the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir (Paul Hillier) joins the Orlando Consort and the effect is mesmerizing. I think it feels like a concerto for the Consort, where the soloists get to show off their virtuosic mastery against the rich sound of the Estonians.

I repeat: you will not have heard anything like this before!

This CD contains a mix of medieval/early renaissance music and those composed in this new millennium by O'Regan and Bryars. The previous reviewer has eloquently lauded the new, thus I will mainly comment on "the old".

This is Orlando Consort's first recording of Machaut's Messe de Nostre Dame. It's surprising that the group waited for so long to record this mass which should have been the "bread-and-butter" of its repertoire. Perhaps, the path has been treaded by almost every distinguished vocal consort specializing in the medieval music, they wanted to make sure that they had something new to say before walking into the recording studio. The result? Stunning!

However, it is the single Du Fay track, the tenor motet "Ave Regina Caelorum", which I wish to put in a few more words. I can not resist the comparison of this with Ockeghem's lament of Binchois "Mort, tu ...." in Orlando Consort's another CD Ockeghem: Missa de plus en plus & chansons.(*) For me these must be 2 of the most deeply-moving pieces of music ever composed. I don't think anyone, not even the most analytical listener, can "stay cool" when listening to this motet. When the music reaches the inserted trope "Miserere miserere supplicanti Dufay...",(**) I am sure you will be, as I have been, swept away. Here the great Du Fay, when faced with the Death, showed us his most tender and vulnerable emotion. In fact, Du Fay asked this motet to be performed at his deathbed. It's a very personal piece for him.

Even if you do not pay attention to the paired imitations and the rhythmic integration of the 4 parts, the natural pacing of the musical flow is unmistakable.
