Over 30 years Burning Man has gone from two families on a San Francisco beach to a global movement in which hundreds of thousands of people around the world create events on every continent. It has been the subject of fawning media profiles, an exhibit in the Smithsonian, and is beloved by tech billionaires and boho counterculturalists alike. But why does it matter? What does it actually have to offer us? The answer, Caveat Magister writes, is simple: Burning Man's philosophy can help us build better communities in which individuals' freedom to follow their own authentic passions also brings them together in common purpose. Burning Man is a prototype, and its philosophy is a how-to manual for better communities, that, instead of rules, offers principles. Featuring iconic and impossible stories from "the playa," interviews with Burning Man's founders and staff, and personal recollections of the late Larry Harvey--Burning Man's founder, "Chief Philosophical Officer," and the author's close friend and colleague--The Scene That Became Cities introduces readers to the experience of Burning Man; explains why it grew; posits how it could impact fields as diverse as art, economics, and politics; and makes the ideas behind it accessible, actionable, and useful.

Review
—Publishers Weekly
“This wise and insightful book by Caveat Magister, one of Burning Man founder Larry Harvey’s muses, takes us on a sublime and illuminating journey that helps explain why the world needs Burning Man and its Ten Principles more than ever.”
—Chip Conley, author of PEAK: How Great Companies Get Their Mojo from Maslow
“Deeply personal yet accessible, The Scene That Became Cities is a first of its kind in the genre of Burning Man literature. The wide-ranging, exemplary discussions thoughtfully cover topics from whether Burning Man truly facilitates individual transformations, to its relevance in the political sphere, to how to translate the principle of radical inclusion, to what Burning Man can offer broader society.”
—Katherine K. Chen, associate professor in the Department of Sociology, The City College of New York

Over the years, whenever I have heard someone begin a sentence with "Burning Man is..." I reflexively cringe, because, more often than not, what comes next will be a statement that may be true, but not complete. It is easy to say A thing that Burning Man is (a Big Party in the desert, a spiritual event , an outrageous outdoor modern art museum, a family reunion) but it is far more difficult to try to boil down this unique event into a single, all encompassing thing.
In this book, Caveat Magister doesn't TRY to boil it down...rather he opens it up...like the proverbial onion and its layers...he peels back and explores many of the different aspects of the event, along with their contradictions, idiosyncrasies, good, bad and ugly parts and helps us navigate both the tiny spaces and the 1,000 foot view of what Burning Man is...or maybe, what it may be.
As someone who has tried (and often failed) to adequately express to others what I believe Burning Man is, I found this book a joy to read as it does what I have often tried to do far more deftly, and considerately than most of the other books on my "Burning Man Shelf".
By sharing tales and anecdotes of Burning Man interspersed with musings on many of the aspects of the event, including some of it's sacred cows, Magister weaves a far more complex yet approachable and digestible examination of Burning Man than most of the other books...and again, most importantly, he doesn't try to simplify Burning Man into one simple thing. He lets it be all of those things that it is...amazing, disappointing, great, small and most of all, inspiring.
A highly recommended read for anyone who has gone, or wanted to go, or just wanted to find out even some of what Burning Man is all about. Or partially about. Or...just a little bit about...
Caveat Magister is a magical being. He frequently downplays this, often by pointing things out in a rational, grounded way and distracting fantasies with truth - but he’s magical. So Caveat is your best bet when trying to discover or dissect a reality where actual unicorns and cats from outer space convene, dancing like the peanuts gang under the stars next to steampunk airships, whirling LED covered cranes, and flaming metal dinosaurs… Caveat naturally makes this stuff highly accessible. Is someone in your life batty for Burning Man and you'd like to understand more? Is this a place you'd like to visit "someday" but the idea of the dust and heat bugs you out? Come on in, join the fun, it's for everyone.
Caveat does not proclaim that Burning Man is the solution to life and everything in it - in fact he makes a compelling case for the pointlessness of it all, but then also reveals how Black Rock City is infused with meaning : “..because it is empty of larger meaning, it allows people to fill it with their own meaning - and once you see that, Burning Man spaces become ‘pointfull’ - absolutely filled with people doing things that are innately meaningful and important to them. And you have access to it all.” Also, “pointfull” is a pretty great word, isn’t it?! I want to live in a more Pointfull society. Who here doesn’t?! This book is a gateway to more Pointfull living without prescribing a definite path. I can’t wait to share and discuss it with friends. Enjoy!
Caveat explains the inexplicable and he does so successfully, skillfully, and with just the right dose of humor and snark. It's a brilliant read. Burners will enjoy it, but so will any reader who is fascinated with meaning and purpose in modern society. Congratulations Benjamin!

Whichever position you take... well... you're not necessarily wrong.
The thing is that, regardless of your position, Burning Man has a lot that it can teach the world about community. And this book is the best expression of those lessons that I have found. It does not sugar coat -- everything isn't all sunshine and rainbows (there are also demons and unicorns and mad poets). It also does not apologize.
What the author does do is ask all of the hard questions about community building. And then mercilessly tease you (and himself) as you try to answer him. And by the end of the book, you feel a little bit better about your fellow humans and what we can create together.
So consider this book your anti-dystopian-non-fiction.
The pages of 'The Poet's' book describe intellectual considerations, historical references, and unforgettably funny and poignant anecdotes about his personal experiences with Burning Man. As an eight-year Burner, his completely unbelievable yet entirely true stories are relatable trips down memory lane. More than once, I found myself laughing and saying to myself, "Oh yeah, been there, done that!"
Caveat's masterful style of writing will both amuse and educate readers in a way that makes the book nearly impossible to set down. There is something for everyone to take away; for seasoned Burners, for the family and friends that we bewilder every year, and for those that have yet rung the bell and crossed the line in the dust.
Buy this book. Read it, then gift it to someone else who needs it.
Caveat has always brought a suspicious optimism to his appraisal of the Burning Man event. But he never falters in the hopeful accountability he expects of the people who bust their ass to raise Cibola for one week a year and the people whose minds are blown by being there for the first time. It's a perspective that is sorely needed now, as we face an epidemic of loneliness and a plague of political uncertainty.
I look forward to savoring the rest of this book in the time between now and gate opening.
I recommend the book both to Burners and to those who wonder why the heck we keep doing this thing in the desert.
If you can't make the journey, or if you have, and want to read a perspective from one of the most brilliant and beautiful minds that has the background and heart to write on this delightfully paradoxical cultural movement known as Burning Man.... then buy THIS BOOK. Be forewarned, there are no pictures in this book, they are not needed, he really is that good of a writer ...... besides you can find an overabundance of photos of the event online, but do it after reading the book.
The section I've just read conveys the full arc of what Burning Man has to offer better than anything I've ever read, and I've read lots. So far, this is a genuinely novel and exciting read that I now believe will palpably add to my understanding of my own experience of Burning Man, and my ability to communicate it to others. Buy this book.
And thank the universe for Benjamin Wachs.
