Prolific historian Martin Gilbert, puts his pen, in this volume, to the life of Anatoly Sharansky, his desire to live in the Land of Israel, and his persecution as a result, by the Soviet authorities.
It tells of Sharanky's deep love for his wife Avital and for his family, his deep spirituality and his concern for the human rights and welfare of all people of goodwill.
After being refused a visa to immigrate to Israel, Sharansky worked as an English interpreter for human rights activist Andrei Sakharov.
His concern for human rights and his desire to be united with his people in their ancient homeland of Israel led to increasing persecution by the tyrannical apparatus of the evil Soviet Empire.
Soon after his marriage in 1976, Sharansky's wife Natasha (Avital) migrated to Israel, and it would be years before they were re-united.
Sharansky was imprisoned under brutal conditions in 1977 and finally, after his plight was taken up by true supporters of freedom and human rights, all over the world, he was released and joined Avital in the Jewish Homeland in 1986.
This book is a documentation of the tyranny of the Soviet dictatorship. It is a testament to the love of freedom and the unbreakable spirit of the Jewish people, and their eternal bonds to the Land of Israel.
The Soviet tyrants tried to break the spirit of the Jewish people, break their bonds to Israel , and destroy their faith and traditions.
The group of Jewish dissidents ,who gathered around Sharansky never left his side, and he always had the support of human rights champions like Andrei Sakharov.
Sharansky, through his years of persecution continued to fight for the rights of the Jews and other persecuted minorites in the Soviet Union, like the ethnic Germans and Pentecostal Christians.
