I am writing this review so this doesn't happen to anyone else. I usually don't take the time to write reviews, but this seemed like the right thing to do.

I have to say, I am already familiar with Scharffen Berger chocolate. I've tried the semi-sweet, bitter-sweet, and unsweetened baking bars (bought at store) and I loved them. Currently my #1 favorite chocolate. I've also tried their cocoa powder (I've only made hot chocolate with it which came out so-so, but I'll keep experimenting with it) and their Sea-Salted Almond (which I've grown to absolutely love).

So I was extremely disappointed when I got this old batch of chocolate from Amazon.

Old chocolate gets discolored, becomes lighter, and loses it's moisture content, so it doesn't linger on the tongue. This was more like eating saw dust that--if you could get passed the texture--vaguely tasted of super-bitter chocolate.

I was shocked, because the expiration date stamped on the package says it expires in July 2014.

I figured I would let it slide if it was just one bar, but i opened another bar, and then the other two--same thing! So, again, I thought, I would love to taste what this was supposed to be, I'll just exchange it for a different batch, since obviously this one was improperly stored, or tempered--I have trouble believing that they would purposefully stamp a fraudulent expiration date on their packages--having had overall wonderful experiences with Scharffen Berger before this.

But apparently you can't return or exchange this chocolate becuase it's a 'grocery' item.

What a great scam! If you're a vendor, and you have some merchandise you know has gone bad, or you've stored improperly, why not just sell it on Amazon, and claim you never knew!Read more ›

I can't identify all the flavors mentioned in the tasting notes on the package but I agree with some of them (pineapple, cherry). This may be my all time favorite bar from Scharffen Berger. It is balanced like all their bars. And very brightly acidic compared to other chocolate bars from competitors with comparable percentage of cacao. This means the Scharffen Berger bars make most other brands taste dull when doing a side by side taste comparison. The acidity gives this bar such bright complexity. My only regret is that it's limited edition and I wish I found it earlier.

I've tried a lot of chocolates by Sharfen Berger and other more expensive brands. This is one of the best I've found. I don't have the refined palate to taste the notes of 'pineapple and banana' and the other things advertised on the bar. But as dark chocolate goes, this stuff is rich and flavorful without being too sweet and without the minty after-taste that some chocolates have.

My only qualm is that it came melted and seems to melt easily at the temperature of a warm room. I'm not sure why, but if that's what it takes for good chocolate, so be it. Still, I'd be careful about ordering this in hot weather unless you could get someone to pack it with cold packs or something.

I like other Scharffen Berger dark chocolate (Bittersweet Dark Chocolate and Nibby Dark Chocolate), but this one was not for me. I tried it on two different occasions just in case, but I personally didn't like the taste at all.

We have been big fans of Scharffen Berger chocolates for a few years, but had never seen this particular bar. It is excellent,
and so is the price. I rarely see a deal on Scharffen Berger. To me, the chocolate has almost a berry-type of flavor. If you
love dark chocolate, I think you will love this bar! I bake with Scharffen Berger, too. Hard to beat!

Nice little deal of the day! Wife is a chocoholic who finds the down-sizing of products (including gourmet chocolate) to be annoying and tiresome. More money for less, and more trash for the landfills.

Smooth and surprisingly "clean" aftertaste. Would definitely choose this chocolate over others again! Packaging was done well to protect the bars too.
