This steampunk action novella follows Jake Starring, the captain of the Sky Turtle (a balloon-like ship) across the arid and inhospitable terrain of an alien planet named Schism.
With the help of his pilot, Sgt. Manny "Mazz" Astatine, and Gen Boroughman, Jake must keep himself, and his crew, afloat and alive on a planet who's indigenous population are referred to as Spiders.
Everything seems to go awry when Jake frees a boy from the slave trade trying to impress his crush, Gen.
Fighting off Spider attacks, deals with back-alley mechanics and negotiating a treaty between two indigenous clans may be what grounds the Sky Turtle once and for all.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Schism. I found it to be a fast-paced story that kept me turning the pages just to find out if Jake would survive the Spiders and get with Gen in the end.
I would recommend this quick read
Schism in both its physical and audio form were very fun reads. The book isn't very long but at the same time isn't so short that you find yourself devoid of any story, character building or adventure. I found that I couldn't stop read this fantastic story until I reached the end.
I loved the alien spiders and found how their magic worked interesting. Mazz ended up being my favorite character especially when he was brought to life in the audiobook by Zach Bjorge who did a fantastic job in his narration.
Schism I recommend picking this book up in any of its formats however if you want a fun and entertaining experience pick up the audiobook you won't regret it!
The story starts with the crew's personal struggles to make their way in the world but grows to encompass the fate of Schism itself. I read an advance copy, so the version you buy will be even better. :)
*This book is about a third or quarter the size of a full novel. With that, you get a fast-paced story, but it also gives less space for full the character development you find in a full-length novel. It's more like a nice afternoon snack than a Thanksgiving feast.
