Lights were fine, codes were fine but the electronic mechanism inside makes a very quiet click but seems unable to activate the lock mechanism. Schlage was not able to give me any ideas other than to change batteries. It is definitely not dead batteries-- all batteries tested 100% full and I replaced them with 2 sets of brand new Duracells to the same result. Nor was it harsh weather as the only one exposed outside (in a covered porch) still works fine. The broken locks were behind insulated storm door, in an enclosed porch and inside a finished/insulated garage. 3rd one died yesterday. I have wasted over $500 on faulty locks and I will be replacing all with normal key locks.
UPDATE + MY FIX: Of four locks: one is working, one was replaced and two are still broken and unable to function. As I removed the 2 broken locks I took the sealed keypad apart in hopes of finding a loose wire. This requires a Torx T-10 bit. Inside I found the same mechanical failure on both of my broken locks. A small pin on a spring had come out of its track and was obstructing the lock mechanism from moving properly. This is why it made a slight click sound but was unable to trip the lock.
I've uploaded images showing the pin and where it was supposed to be. This is a mechanical fault/defect by schlage as plastic ridge could easily keep this pin in place. Also it is inside a torx sealed compartment that users are not supposed to access.Read more ›
My point is that 4 months is a long way from the 3 years advertised so consider this when you are thinking of getting this lock.
4/5/09 Another update...3rd battery lasted less than 1 week and when it failed the door sat unlocked all day, not good. Will contact Schlage for replacement, but do not like to have to return things and pay shipping
Like other schlage locks I have owned, this unit seems to be very well made, sturdy, and easy to install. The programming of codes is simple, and codes can be added or deleted just by using the keypad. Keypad use as far as entering codes or even updating codes is straighforward. The fact that a simple button push "lights up" the buttons at night is also cool.
The buttons are also epoxy-coated, so the numbers won't "wear off" thus revealing the codes used. I have a separate code for each family member, and can easily add codes if I have a contractor stopping by.
A key can be used to open the lock if for some reason the electronic part stops functioning (too cold from sub-sero weather, perhaps?). Since this is a Schlage lock, it can even be re-keyed so that the key you have matches the other Schlage locks your house may have.
Update: I called the company with my complaints. The conversation lasted less than 2 mins. Apparently, there was a problem with the lubricant that was used, especially in the extreme cold weather. Schlage sent a replacement within the week ; the new one is working perfectly! Over all we are very happy with our key lock........ Now I am am very pleased that Schlage stood behind their product.
