If you’re an avid camper, then you probably have a good idea of all the camping essentials. What you maybe haven’t thought too much about is adding a portable fridge freezer to that list. Here are three reasons why you should invest in one today!No Ice Necessary: You don’t need to buy ice. This is where a portable fridge freezer comes into play. Typically, a portable fridge freezer is equipped with a 12V plugin application for your vehicle or camper. Fridge freezers are capable of keeping all of your food and drink items ice cold and even frozen for as long as you have a power supply. It is cheaper in the long run than continually buying ice when you need it. Durability:That bag of ice you bought at the nearest gas station might last in your cooler for a few hours, maybe? However, hard coolers are susceptible to mold and interior deterioration. This is due to the inability to keep a regulated cool temperature. So a portable fridge freezer that uses a power supply only needs to be cleaned every so often compared to a hard-sided cooler that you should probably clean out after each use, or whenever you dump out all that water from your melted ice.Portable:Of course, it’s in the name! Isn’t it great that you can have that with your food and drink while on the go? Having a Schloß portable fridge freezer gives you that ease of access whenever you want your water, juice, milk, etc. as well as your fruit, cheese, or other car camping snacks. If you haven’t already looked, it might be time to up your camping game by investing in a portable fridge freezer!

4.0 out of 5 stars Robust fridge with some minor issues
By Scientist on August 12, 2020
“Schloß 60L Car Portable Refrigerator” is a very robust car fridge with some minor issues.

* Summary
The Good
- Very robust construction
- Very low power consumption when compressor is not running
- Fast cooling
- Quiet
- Cigarette socket extension cable is included

The Bad
- Lowest operating voltage is 10.3 V, not 9.6 V as manual says
- Handle bars are not securely attached
- Black body absorbs heat easily
- Inaccurate website product descriptions

* Introduction
In case you haven’t heard of it, Schloß is a brand name owned by a large Chinese company Homeeasy Industrial, Co. Label on the bottom says this fridge was made in China. Homeeasy Industrial also makes various household appliances under brand names such as Geek, EQK, and Brayden. I believe that Schloß is a new brand name they just introduced in the U.S. to market this fridge.

This fridge comes with three cables.
- AC adapter with female cigarette socket at the end
- Male cigarette socket to 2-pin DC connector cable which plugs into fridge
- Cigarette socket extension cable (male - female)

It’s nice that they included cigarette socket extension cable. I’ve never seen that for other car fridges. The 2-pin DC connector is a standard type used by many car fridges, so you can buy a generic car fridge AC adapter ($35 on Amazon) and use it for this fridge if you like. Output voltage of AC adapter was 13.8V. Personally, I don’t like the unsecure cigarette socket connection, so I would definitely buy a dedicated AC adapter if I’m using this fridge with AC adapter primarily.

* Exterior
After opening the box, you need to fix handle bars on both sides of fridge with included screws. Package includes necessary tool and eight screws with spring washers. I liked that they included spring washers, not regular washers, because that tells me that this fridge is designed and tested against vibrations of a car. However, I didn’t like that the handle bars are not completely secured to their base. They can rotate freely when you grab them to lift the fridge (see video). Other car fridges don’t do that. I’m going to have to wrap some tape around ends of these bars later.

The exterior shell is made of very sturdy, durable plastic. I can comfortably sit on it (I’m 160 lbs) without worrying about breaking the lid at all. The lid can be easily switched sides without using any tool. The thickness of walls is about 1.48 inches on the long sides. The short sides on which handle bars are attached are a little thicker. Black body is not best for an outdoor fridge, as it tends to warm up easily under sunlight.

* Interior
Product description says capacity is 56L and also 60L, which drove me crazy, so I measured internal dimensions (see photo) and calculated actual capacity. It was 58.1L. This fridge comes with a huge basket (see photo), which is nice. But at this size, I wish it had a divider. You’ll have to do a lot of digging to find what you want inside this huge basket. At the bottom of interior is a drain plug. User manual doesn’t say anything about it, but you can pull it up to open the drain (It’s not a screw. Just pull it up).

* Operation
I tested this fridge with a 12V DC power source of my power station Rockpals 300W. I turned on the fridge and tried to set temperature to -4 F, which is the lowest temperature you can set to, according to product description. But I couldn’t set it below 0 F. User manual says lowest temperature is -0.4 F, so I assume -4 F is just a typo. After a few seconds, compressor started up smoothly and consumed about 40W according to power meter I inserted between Rockpals and this fridge. Then, after a few minutes of “warming up”, compressor went full-power. In Max mode, it consumed about 62W. In Eco mode, it consumed about 47W. Power consumption decreased as temperature approached the target temperature.

Operating noise was pretty quiet. It wasn’t the quietest fridge I have tested (Dometic and Iceco were quieter), but definitely not the loudest. Max mode was slightly louder than Eco mode, but it was still pretty quiet. I used my phone app measure it, and it was around 40 db.

I started with empty fridge at 64 F, and it took 1 hour and 13 minutes to reach 0 F. This is pretty fast compared to other car fridges. After reaching 0 F, compressor stopped, and power consumption dropped to impressive 0.6 W. Other fridges I have tested consumed 2 to 3 W while idling, so I was really pleased with it.

When I disconnected and reconnected power, it remembered the last power state, and started right up after I reconnected power. This may sound like a small thing, but it saves hassle to turn it on again when you are using this fridge in a car on a switched 12 V outlet.

On the next day, I tried AC adapter. Power consumptions in warm up state was 46 W, Max mode was 80 W, and Eco mode was 55 W, measured at power outlet. They are obviously higher due to inefficiency of AC-DC conversion. Note that, unlike some other fridges, this fridge has only DC input. So, you cannot connect both AC adapter and car adapter and switch between them automatically.

The last test I did was battery protection functionality. The most important part to me is the lowest operating voltage. Why? Because, like many other car campers these days, I use lithium-ion power station to operate fridge. Unlike AGM batteries which is typically used for starter battery, lithium-ion batteries can be drained well below 12 V without damaging it. So, if a fridge can’t operate at lower voltage, I cannot use full capacity of my lithium-ion power station. Some high-end power stations like Jackery and Ecoflow have a regulated 12 V output, so they don’t have this problem, but those are still rare.

According to the charge in user manual, lowest setting allows this fridge to operate at as low as 9.6 V, and cut-in voltage is 10.9 V. I started with my half-charged Rockpals (11 V). As soon as I powered on the fridge, voltage dropped to 10.8 V, and fridge stopped with error E1 “Battery voltage is low”. Cut-in voltage of 10.9 V seemed pretty accurate. I recharged my rockpals to 11.4 V, and finally was able to start up the fridge. But after an hour or so, when voltage dropped to 10.3 V, this fridge stopped with error E5 “The model is overheating”. I touched the fridge, but it wasn’t overheating. I unplugged everything, recharged my Rockpals back to 11.4 V, and did the same test again, and it stopped again at 10.3 V with error E5. So, I have to conclude that the lowest voltage this fridge can operate is 10.3 V, not 9.6 V as user manual says. I can still use this fridge with my Rockpals using step-up voltage converter ($26.50 on Amazon), but I was a little bit disappointed. At 10.3 V, my Rockpals still had 40% of juice left. Other fridges like Alpicool and ICECO can actually go down to 9.6 V.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best thing since sliced bread!!!
By Melrel05 on August 6, 2020
I have a bit of a backstory. So I’m a car hauler and am on the road 5-6 days a week and sleep in hotels a lot. For the past 10 years I’ve been using a cooler to keep my food cold everyday. The problem with that is I have to stop 2 times a day and buy ice. Every single day. So when I saw this thing it was like the heavens opened up and angels were singing!

And let me tell you this portable refrigerator/freezer is legit the answer to my prayers! It works flawlessly! It is capable of any temp between 50F and -4F. It gets cold pretty quickly, about 15 minutes gets the temp to 30F and hats in a hot truck when it’s 90F outside. I turned it and my truck off and 4 hours later I went and got it out and there was a bottle of water in it and the water was still cold! And I only had it set at 34F so it wasn’t frozen to begin with!

It has multiple charging options as listed in the information on this page. It also comes with handles to put on so it’s a bit easier to carry. It is pretty big and a little heavy but so was my cooler with ice so no big deal for me there. Also as you can see in the picture even though this is big and it does have plenty of room for basically 5 days worth of meals for me, it has a platform inside of it so it’s not all just open space inside.

So would I recommend this thing? Absolutely! Even though the price is kind of steep its priced fairly and comparable to other brands of these. 10+ years worth of ice 2x a day would have bought me a few of these is the way I look at it! And Th e best part for me is I don’t have to stop and get ice everyday anymore!!!
