What is striking about this story is that the characters are so normal, like everyday people. They are not phoney, glamorised or over-embellished. They are ordinary people with problems and challenges that they need to overcome. Some have more deep-rooted problems than others.
The School of Dreams is so well written, and you can read this novel with relaxation and ease, for the most part. There are, however, elements of conflict between characters that ignites the novel.
I particularly enjoyed the author's use of imagery. The descriptions of people and places were rich and vivid. I could picture myself in some scenes; the characters drew me into their lives, hopes, dreams and dramas.
Although I took delight in reading this beautifully crafted novel that interwove five different lives, I think that one storyline had me hooked throughout.
The story of Will and Hema is one that I believe many people can relate to. Their star-crossed interracial relationship, set to fail due to cultural differences and meddling parents, was a sad but touching tale. I really wanted Hema to fight for the partnership just as much as Will did, but she seemed to allow their differences and her family's contempt, to drive them apart. I hope these two can make it work in the end. They deserve to be happy.
All in all, this is a great novel and I recommend it to other readers.
I look forward to reading more novels from the talented Julia Sutton.
A great first book in a series that I look forward to reading more of! So why don't you start a new chapter with this author?
