The two albums on this CD were originally released in 1960 on the Roulette label and are not easy to find. These were the first recordings of an orchestra Russo first began in 1957 in Chicago, and pointed to a new approach to music for big band. He broke the group up into two sections and added four cellos, so the result was stereophonic in nature. He wrote about this approach extensively in his book on composition published in 1968 by the University of Chicago Press.

Russo's music from this period tends to be rather austere to my ears, but as the music on this CD shows, he was creating fascinating, wonderful music. This ensemble was still quite meaningful to Russo many years later; we discussed this orchestra at length, and he hoped that these albums, as well as the two albums with the London Jazz Orchestra, would be reissued one day. At least we have these two, and the sound is excellent.
