Product Description
School Smart stepping buckets help develop balance and coordination skills. Six non-skid buckets are connected by a braided nylon rope for creating an 11.0’obstacle course, and are in bright primary colors for visual appeal—two each of red, blue, and yellow. Nylon is very strong and flexible, has excellent abrasion resistance, is lightweight, and resists crushing and cracking. The buckets are made of molded plastic for durability and strength, and have 1/16"/.20cm raised gripping lines on top for added stability. The buckets measure 5.0 x 12.0 inches/12.7 x 30.5cm (H x W), and can support up to 330.0 lb./149.7kg. (H is height, the vertical distance from the lowest to highest point; W is width, the horizontal distance from left to right.) The stepping buckets nest for storage, and weigh 7.0 lbs./3.2kg when stacked together.

You may want to show your child the picture from the box, the one of the girl walking on them. Or maybe print out the picture in here. Use them as a visual aid. I had to do that in order for my daughter to understand what they were for. Until I showed her the picture of the girl from the box, she thought they were buckets or stools. She would either sit on them, or turn them upside down and use them as buckets, trying to figure out why they were tied up with ropes. I don't think they can hold an adult's weight; otherwise, I would have shown her myself how to use them. But they certainly look sturdy enough for a child her size; even bigger and heavier.
These buckets are very bright and colourful, which is something I also look for when picking up certain toys and OT equipment for my daughter. It helps with her sensory processing.
Speaking of Sensory Processing Disorder, I saw reviews saying how some children with SPD may not tolerate the surface of these buckets. Yes, they do have some slight bumps on them to prevent slippery situations. (They are a bit smaller than a U.S. nickel.) And while my daughter does not like to wear shoes due to her SPD, it didn't seem to affect her at all since she was stepping all over them as soon as she was able to figure out what they were for. Nevertheless, SPD is different for everybody and these might feel harder on some other little feet.
In summary, if your child is like mine and you have been asked by your child's occupational therapist to get something to help them work on their core balance, these can get the job done for a fraction of the cost of fancy balance beams. I would highly recommend them.

So this is a set of 6 primary colored buckets strung together with a rope, and I purchased this to use to work on some of his gross motor and planning skills. The fact that they are different colors is going to be an interesting thing in the future, when I can expand to asking him to start on a certain color. For now, I like the rope, because it gives him a visual guideline of how he can move his legs to get across it, and it still allows you to set it up in many different configurations.
The tops of these are textured, which is good for slipping, but maybe not so good with kiddos who have sensory issues. Some clinics, ours included, want their clients for PT and OT to have their shoes off so things aren't damaged. My son, who was barefoot when he first stepped on these, immediately stepped off because of the textures. Then in one of those moments that just about made me want to weep, because I remember the day when he wouldn't touch grass or sand with his bare feet, actually got back on it. Again with the squeals!! So super excited when I see him react well to a new texture I wouldn't expect him to, I love it! But it is a cautionary note if you are an OT working in such a clinic and are planning on using this product with a child who has sensory issues.
The seem to be sturdy enough right out of the box, and I love the fact that it is stackable, which makes for more compact storage, but time will be the best test ultimately for how well it is made, and I will update this if there are any unusual problems that occur. For right now, they seem very solid, I even walked across them myself to give him the idea of what he should be doing, and they didn't give under my weight, so that seems to bode well I think.
Overall, I think this is a cool product for working on certain gross motor skills
Update - we’ve now had this for over a year and my 2.5 year old and 4.5 year old still love it, as do their friends. Their balance is extradordinary which I credit a lot to this product. Several friends have since purchased this product after seeing the benefits and joy it has brought my children, and all of the children who come for play dates. Rare is the day this does not see action in our house!
