Editorial Reviews

(Please note this is NTSC format - buy PAL version here http://amzn.com/B00FJC7XTK) DVD WITH 50 MINUTES BONUS FOOTAGE Award Winning untold story of World War 2, looking at the Nazi persecution of Jehovah's Witnesses as seen through the eyes of a schoolgirl. Jehovah's Witnesses were among the first prisoners of concentration camps for their refusal to say "Heil Hitler", join the army, or participate in the Nazi way of life. Based on the book "Facing The Lion" - Memoirs of a Girl in Nazi Europe by Simone Arnold Liebster. Directed by Royal Television Society Award winner Jonny Lewis and Aiden Bloodworth. DVD includes 50 minutes bonus footage. WINNER BEST DOCUMENTARY FFRESH FILM FESTIVAL 2013

"The Schoolgirl, The Nazis, and the Purple Triangles is an extremely professional piece exploring a little-discussed corner of Nazi history, presented in a classic documentary style." - Jennifer Perkin Ffresh Film Festival

?The investigation of the story was thorough and compelling and I was left wanting to find out more on the subject. The management of the archive material was intriguing and the edit flowed beautifully. The sound design and music were also well managed with considered intelligence.? - Award Winning Filmmaker Andrew Kötting

The Schoolgirl The Nazis and The Purple Triangles is the autobiographical account of a young girl's courage in the face of insurmountable odds. Set during the Nazi occupation of Eastern France, it tells the story of one 12-year-old's struggle to follow her conscience rather than give in to Nazi propaganda and persecution.

12 year old Simone Arnold continually refuses to give the Heil Hitler salute while at school. "Heil Hitler" means "salvation belongs to Hitler". As a Jehovah's Witness, Simone and her family consider given the Heil Hitler salute to be idolatry. Finally Simone is given an ultimatum. She is given five minutes to give the salute in front of Hitlers picture and in front of all her fellow students, or face expulsion from school, arrest and separation from her family.

In the Nazi years, about 10,000 Witnesses, most of them of German nationality, were imprisoned in concentration camps. An estimated 2,500 to 5,000 Witnesses died in the camps or prisons. More than 200 men were tried by the German War Court and executed for refusing military service.

Jehovah?s Witnesses story in World War 2 is unique in many ways, due to the fact that they were persecuted by the Nazis for refusing to give the Heil Hitler salute and refusal to do military service, while at the same time in the United States, Jehovah's Witnesses were also persecuted and imprisoned for their refusal to give the pledge of allegiance to the American flag or join the army. Similar things happened in Britain and other Allied Nations.

In concentration camps Jehovah's Witnesses, unlike Jews and other prisoners, had, according to Professor Christine King, "a unique and fairly easy way to get out". All they had to do was sign a document renouncing their faith. Only a handful ever did.

Simone's honesty about her joys and fears and her harrowing experiences at school and in a Nazi prison have appealed to thousands of readers of her book "Facing The Lion", many of whom are young people themselves, struggling with similar peer pressure today. The film "The Schoolgirl The Nazis and The Purple Triangles" features dramatic reconstructions, historical archive film, interview footage with Simone Arnold Liebster, and historical background from Professor Christine King CBE, President of Staffordshire University and is directed by Royal Television Society Award winner Jonny Lewis and Aiden Bloodworth
