This is a really excellent set - four discs of some of Schubert's finest and most affecting music played by one of the great string quartets of the last 40 years. The music itself is simply fantastic: Schubert's wonderful last three String Quartets - the A minor "Rosamunde" D804, the D minor "Death and the Maiden" D810, and the great G major D887 - plus one earlier quartet, the brilliant single movement "Quatettsatz" D703 and of course the sublime String Quintet in C, D956. It is utterly captivating and wonderfully varied with limpid beauty in the famous Adagio of the Quintet, drama in the famous opening of "Death and the Maiden" and aching melancholy in the Minuet of the A minor "Rosamunde" quartet, for example. For me, Schubert is at his best in his chamber music and this selection represents some of the cream of it.

The performances are extremely good. Intonation is generally very sound, which cannot always be said of The Lindsays by any means, and their empathy with and interpretation of the music is excellent. They play together with a superb understanding and produce something really special in places. This has been my favourite version of the String Quintet for many years, and every movement in this entire set is really involving and rewarding. I have versions of two of the Quartets which I marginally prefer to these (Quartetto Italiano for the A minor and the Takacs Quartet for Death and the Maiden, if you're interested), but I have owned the original issues of the discs in this set for years, and I am still extremely fond of them and play them regularly and with great pleasure.

You simply can't go wrong with this set. It's an absolute bargain and you get a wealth of truly great music in excellent performances. Very warmly recommended.

the lindsays, along with the quartetto italiano, seem to be the go-to recommendations of many critics. quartet 14, death and maiden, is a favorite piece of mine, and i've listened several times to versions by the lindsays, the quartetto italiano, the alban berg, the takacs and the melos. the "third ear" reviewer damns with faint praise the melos' versions of the late quartets, condemning them to the second rank, but i find them more expressive, more romantic if you will, with a more prominent cello throughout and a exceedingly expressive first violin in the 2nd movement.

the lindsay version is more restrained, less openly emotional, but excellent in tone and balance. for someone who finds the melos' style too over the top, the lindsays or the quartetto italiano will do just fine.

The Lindsays were one of the greatest quartets, especially in their interpretations of Beethoven and Schubert, but also Haydn and Mozart. This is a reproduction of the original ASV recordings from England. They are worth every cent, and can often be found at a bargain price. They are definitely worth investigating. Do not miss out.

This set of 4 CDs includes Schubert’s four last and greatest quartets – No. 12 in C minor, D. 703 (“Quartettsatz,” written in 1820), No. 13 in A minor, D. 804 (“Rosamunde,” 1824), No. 14 in D minor, D. 810 (“Death and the Maiden,” 1824), and No. 15 in G major, D. 887 (1826) – his celebrated Quintet in C major, D. 956 (1828), plus an early Quartet in B flat major, D. 112 (1814). Schubert’s music is so great you might think that if you just play the notes it will take care of itself. But if you play too fast you get “Schubert lite”; too slow (striving for gravitas) and you lose the 1820s Vienna atmosphere. An Apollonian style – which sometimes works with Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, or Brahms – misses the uniqueness of Schubert completely baring his [musical] psyche; but if intense feelings lead to harshly played notes, they destroy the lyricism that is Schubert’s language for baring his psyche. Peter Cropper and the Lindsay String Quintet, a British ensemble that stayed together from 1965 to 2005 always get Schubert right. They play with intensity and concentration second to none while preserving all the lyricism and singing quality of Schubert. They are four distinct individuals who play as a team. The sound recording quality from ASV is outstanding.

Quartet No. 13 in A minor, D. 804 emphasizes Schubert’s lyrical side, in contrast to the more dramatic Quartets Nos. 12, 14, and 15. One memorable melody after another, moodily shifting from key to key or between minor and major. The Quartet is sometimes called “Rosamunde” because Schubert reused the 2nd movement’s 1st theme in his incidental music (D. 797) for a play by that name.

I have a few traversals of the Schubert Quartets: Juilliard, Melos, Auryn. These by The Lindsays are very fine, distinguished by emotiveness and intensity. These might be the best versions of the Late Quartets out there. However, these aren't easy to find cheap. Scour the Internet!

Update: Trying to find their Beethoven Late Quartets set--same thing. Not cheap. Why is all their stuff OOP? Maybe there's a few releases out there. but their Beethoven Late Quartets is supposed to be among the finest performances. Ouch! You really want to search for and buy a copy of this Schubert set. It's worlds apart from the others I've heard.
