The songs featured are from Schubert's famous song cycles. The piano part is played by Daria Hovora and cellist Mischa Maisky takes the vocal line.

By Grady Harp HALL OF FAMETOP 100 REVIEWERVINE VOICE on October 29, 2004
Format: Audio CD
SCHUBERT: SONGS WITHOUT WORDS is an elegant recital by pianist Daria Hovora and cellist Mischa Maisky that allows us to hear Schubert songs, beautifully rich as they are with the texts as sung by many of our finest singers, here solely for the instrumental line. Somehow the interplay between melody and accompaniment (always an equal partnership in Schubert's hands) is heightened by this experience.

Not that the entire album is appropriated by the cello standing in for a vocalist: the opening work is "Sonata for Arpeggione and Klavier" and is one of the highlights of the CD. But just listen to the performances of 'Standchen', 'An die Musik' and 'Du bist die Ruhe' and hear the extraordinary marriage between the piano and cello, singing as beautifully as any other version. This is one of those CDs that bears keeping out for multiple listenings in the late evening. Grady Harp, October 2004

OK, I own a zillion CD's but if I were headed to the provervial desert isle...this would be one to be sure to slip into one of my wallet sleeves.
First off, the music is unbelievably beautiful -- you get a first class performance of the Arpeggione. Maisky's tone just melts.
But then, there's the addition of the Schubert songs - and here's where this album is peerless.
I'd recommend this recording to anyone who loves cello music, Schubert or just frankly is looking for some new repertoire -- a wonderful gift for that classical music friend you don't know what to give.

This recording of Shubert's Songs Without Words is stunning. The music is rarely heard and deserves a much wider audience. The lyricism, the execution, and the pure pleasure you will hear on this album are unsurpassed in the romantic repertoire. I generaly prefer vocal music; the cello does all the voice can do and more in this recording.

For people who like Schubert, this CD is a real must. The songs are not sung, in stead the cello takes the place of the human voice. It is played with such extreme sensitivity that you must love it. It definitely is my favourite CD.

Truly beautiful music. Truly. This recording provides a wonderful, lovely respite from the insanity of the outer world. To both Mischa Maisky and Daria Hovora, I sincerely say 'Thank You'. Enjoyed their music offering so much, I purchased a second CD for a friend.

This beautiful album I consider to be the finest available recording of Schubert's Sonata for Arpeggione and Piano, and I have several other recordings of this work including Rostropovich with Britten and Ma with Ax. This has become obvious as I keep returning to listen again. It is simply a pleasure to hear and makes a fascinating comparison with Maisky's earlier (1984) recording of the Arpeggione on Philips with pianist Martha Argerich. In this more recent performance, Maisky plays with more obvious and singular personality and more joyful and playful emotion. His playing sounds more bold, more assertive and confident. Perhaps he has acquired a different instrument in the interim. The tone has become sweeter and more seductive. Daria Hovora makes a sensitive and very responsive collaboration on the piano but is less assertive, as expected, than Argerich in the earlier recording. Argerich offers perhaps a wider palette of colors and more subtlety but makes the piece too serious and intellectual. Maisky with Argerich stays often on the softer side of dynamics with much pianissimo. Schubert created a work with virtuosic arpeggiated passages and alternating light and dark moods which in my opinion should not be played in a "mechanical" fashion as some cellists have done. Maisky and Hovora have made the piece exciting and playful and have got it just right.

I bought it after hearing the deeply moving performance of the Arpeggione Sonata (5 stars). Not for the songs without words (3 stars), though they make pleasant listening. The cello lacks the liveliness of the voice and tended to make the songs overly sentimental, rather like hotel lounge music. The originals are to be preferred, unless you have an aversion to singers. But if you are looking for high quality hotel lounge music instead of Schubert, here it is (5 stars for that!)!

Very nice music played by skilled musicians but unfortunately it's let down by the recording quality which is not particularly good - there is background "hiss" (or white noise) audible in the quieter parts of the music.
