email@example.com: I 've raised and trained German Shepherds for the past 25 years, and am really impressed with the book TOP WORKING DOGS: A TRAINING MANUAL. I highly recommend it to anyone who plans on training a puppy or dog in tracking, obedience or protection work. Whether you're a person who just plans to train a pup basic manners and obedience for around the house, or if you're a top trainer, - I suggest you read this book! It covers all the phases of training and explains how to start puppies at a young age. The book is very easy to understand. -G.Brendel/German SV --G.Brendel,German SV National Train.Director
This book is definitely my favorite and the one I go back to the most. It is very engaging and easy to read. I also happen to own "Advanced Schutzhund" by Balabanov, and I have no desire to open it again after i finished reading it over 10 months ago. --Botanica 73
"Great Content" The book … is packed with a wealth of information. It is not a book that will be read once and put on the shelf, I fully expect to come back to it over and over again. I would hesitate to lend it to people, because I might never see it again. It is that good of a book, and such a gold mine that will likely be around for a long time. --Botanica 73

FIVE STARS -- GREAT BUY! Can't recommend enough.
I found this book to be extremely informative, even for someone with no experience in Schutzhund. Like some of the other reviewers stated, there are few pictures and no photographs. There is no fluff. Everything presented is useful.
The author provides valid insight into dog psychology as it relates to training. There is no "dog whisperer" nonsense here, just straight forward training.
The book is very comprehensive and I frequently refer to it not only ahead of training sessions, but during them.
In fact, it is exactly the opposite of that. If you like the idea of a bullet list of problems you may encounter doing a particular behavior (even obedience behaviors like heel) with a specific solution or solutions for each one, you will love this.
If you prefer pictures of the dog at your side and a feel-good narrative, you won't. This is "just the facts, Ma'am".
I'm enjoying it though because I am enthusiastic about training of all types and just get a lot out of doing this work with my dog. It's unlikely that I will do anything remotely like Schutzhund, but I'm still getting a lot out of it.
If you read this and think, "maybe I should get this", go ahead. If you read this and think "maybe I shouldn't", then you, in fact, probably shouldn't. It's not for everybody, but it's great for those it is suited for.
Top Working Dogs, 5th Edition was a gift to me that is not only much appreciated, but also a phenomenal book in which I'm proud to have in my arsenal of literature. Whether you are a professional pet lover or a seasoned competitor in dog sport - this book is for you! There is simply too much to compliment on every chapter, so I'll sum it up... Strictly business, no nonsense, ethical, respectfully written by a prestigeous and honourable pioneer of the Schutzhund sport. The Do's and Don'ts are clear and exact. I intended this study to sharpen my handling and presentation, but I've also incorporated the techniques into "Prison Pups-N-Pals" and "Paws of Freedom".
I own several books by other noted authors but Dr. D. Schellenberg's book has given me the edge I yearn for as a competitor, while strengthening my skill as an instructor. I will forever utilize this manual.
Dr. Shellenberg, I would love to have an autographed photo of you with one or all of your prized dogs. Truly a priceless collectable to accompany my accolades.
Lead Instructor "Prison Pups N Pals" & "Paws of Freedom"
This book doesn't look impressive by its cover (outdated, anyone?) but it is well written and organized into helpful sections about dog training. I enjoyed reading it front-to-back while I was anxious to get my puppy. I haven't picked it up since to refer to the training methods, but I may if I am stumped.
