But some times the small screws on the back of the tuning handles do not get tightened at the factory. If the screws are not tight the adjustment will not work properly. I tried it and it's true. The guitar works beautifully (for a child's guitar which I realized that I purchased). Time will tell how often they will need to be righted if ever but for now I am a happy grandmother. watch out I have a budding star on my hands. Schylling 6 String Acoustic Guitar
That being said, it does not tune as a guitar does. Do not buy this if you want a guitar for your child that will play like the real thing.
However, as a music teacher, this instrument is good for young children to play and hold and pretend, and create interest in playing. Let's talk about some of the tuning challenges.
First the tuning pegs are friction mechanisms that work best when the little phillips screw is tight. If the peg will not hold its position you may need to tighten them. They should be quite snug, but still able to turn.
Next if you want to tune the instrument, it is a challenge. Why? Because unlike a guitar that has 6 different strings, this instrument has 6 strings too, but technically has 4 different ones. (string 1, string 2, string 3 and 4 are the same, string 5 and 6 are the same).
The best tuning I have found is in the open position. (Which means to tune the instrument to play a chord when no fingers are pressing a string on the finger board).
I tried this tuning (1st string = E, 2nd string = C, 3rd and 4th strings to G, and 5th and 6th strings to E). I am not saying this is the proper tuning, just a suggestion for what worked best for me and this instrument.
Now when the child strums the instrument it sounds good and this will encourage them to play. If the cover all the strings at the same fret, it still sounds good.
I would not recommend this instrument for children past 2nd grade unless you just want them to have a toy.
Against my wishes, someone tuned the guitar and broke 2 strings, so both extra's it came with are gone. Then my kids played with it for a day and another string broke. I'm hoping to get it into the music shop for better quality strings, but for the price - you can't beat this! My kids LOVE it, and really, thats all that matters.
I followed the instructions on the back and it is impossible to properly tune this guitar. I play guitar myself and I know how to tune a guitar. The only progress I made was by tightening the screws on the tuning pegs. With that you can get the strings to stay tight, but not hold a note.
Do not buy this guitar.
If you have hopes that your child will play a single chord, it cannot be done on this toy.
If you just want to get your tottler something to strum, DO NOT BUY THIS P.O.S. The strings come lose so easily, you will be "tuning" the guitar more than the child will be playing it.
