We live in an exciting time. During the past twenty years, consciousness research has become a mainstream, widely accepted research field. Special funding for brain research by many national governments such as the brain initiative in the US and the European Union indicates the perceived importance of the field.
Physics is also a research area in its renaissance. The Large Hadron Collider is the most expensive research project in human history. Nevertheless, the discovery of the Higgs boson only deepened existing mysteries and did not take us any closer to solving some of the great scientific puzzles of our time (such as dark matter, the accelerating expansion of the universe, gravity, or dark matter). If you don't understand what I am talking about, you are at the same level as I was when I started reading this book. Being bombarded with a plethora of terminologies you are not familiar with makes the first part of this book excruciatingly difficult to read. But this criticism does not mean that I do not appreciate what the author achieved.
Especially the second part, which is about the workings of the brain, mind and emotions, is really worthwhile. The repetitive use of difficult terminologies after a while starts somehow to ground these new ontologies so that you get the impression that you start to understand something. The second part is a highly original treaty, which maps mental phenomena to physical phenomena. The mind is presented as a temporal fermion itself and its emotional behaviour is shown to have interesting parallels to the behaviour of the particulate fermions we know from physics. Most interesting I found the notion that increased attention for detail (i.e. information saturation) is associated with higher brain activity frequencies whereas relaxation is associated with lower frequencies. The brain tries to maintain a constant level of activity, which is warranted by the so-called Default Mode Network activity and increases in frequency are balanced by decreases in frequency over time. Depression can be compared to quantum spin-down states, whereas equanimity and relaxation are compared to spin-up states which are more in tune with the freedom of a manifold torus unbound by a field. Whereas I see these maps as interesting analogies, the author presents them as is they are facts. Fortunately at the end of the book, she admits that it is a hypothesis needing verification.
I consider the title of the book misleading. The title triggered me to buy the book, but there is very little about consciousness in the book, apart from the link of focussed attention to higher brain activity frequencies. The book does not tell you what consciousness is or how it functions and certainly does not solve the hard-problem of consciousness.
Part three is about evolutionary biology and provides a similar map as the second part, but now between evolutionary processes and Deli's physics. In a certain way Deli shows that a same pattern is present in macro and micro dimensions, in spatial and temporal dimensions and in mind and matter dimensions. Such a unifying pattern may indeed be included in a T.O.E. However in the absence of solving the hard-problem of consciousness IMHO it does not qualify as a T.O.E. yet.
I strongly recommend this book to physicists to judge for themselves if Deli's model is a valid way to processes at the macro and micro dimensions and whether it can replace general relativity theory. I recommend the book to neuroscientists as it will broaden their perspective. As to laymen like me I think we can better wait until "Déli for dummies" is published. Nonetheless, I appreciate the highly original content, which certainly contributed to my understanding of the workings of the mind.
