The only reason this book got two stars from me is because if you DID want your child to look up everything and just fill in crossword puzzles and diagrams after locating the required information, this book would work well and it does cover a lot of good topics. It is also very colorful. Lastly, it has many, many crossword puzzles which could be good or bad, depending on your child. For mine, it's another negative.
I really wish I had not invested in Science Essentials at all but hopefully my review will help some other homeschool moms and dads.
The numbering for the questions is way off. For example, 6 across reads: "I am the only planet known to support life." Easy enough, right? The answer is Earth. But there are six spaces in the crossword puzzle for the answer.
7 across, "I am called the 'red planet'" has five spaces.
They also list a question for 5 across (there is no 5 across), but 9 across is missing.

Book is definitely appropriate for the higher end of the range.(6th grade) As a teacher of gifted students, I use the book a lot for review and reinforcement. Good seriesPublished on May 31, 2014 by Denise McIlwaine
