We checked this book out of the library and liked it so much I decided to buy it. Most science books either:

A) Explain science principles without offering kids a way to really, simply see it themselves and then it's nothing but boring "book learning", or
B) Are full of experiments that require expensive or unusual ingredients or equipment. That might be suitable for science fair projects that you're planning to devote money and energy to, but not if you just want kids to have some science fun around the house.

This book covers a wide variety of topics, gives brief, simple, colorful explanations, and most important, simple and easy projects to do at home. And except for a couple of items, virtually everything uses things you can get from a local store, like mentos, cornstarch, food coloring, vegetable oil, paper clips, stiff paper, batteries, a flower, gelatin, rubbing alcohol, etc. (The rubbing alcohol, if you can believe it, is for isolating DNA!)

The occasional less-likely item, like two sizes of magnifying glasses, aren't expensive to get, and are used as lenses in multiple experiments about light, so you aren't using them for just one experiment.

All in all, a great science book for kids. Great science fair ideas, but more importantly from my point of view, a lot of simple but impressive experiments for the casual home experimenter.

My son saw this book in his 2nd grade classroom and just had to have it. I was able to find a hardcover version at a great price. Love the illustrations and simple steps! Anything from DK is bound to be of higher quality than most.

I've done a few projects in this book and the students have enjoyed all of them. I like that the materials are very accessible at home or easy to find at any store. Some experiments haven't worked out but I think it's because we chose to use play dough instead of modeling clay... Overall, there are many fun experiments this book has to offer.

I teach science k-8. I don't think this book has made it back into my classroom for more than a class period because students love it so much and keep signing it out. You have to love a book that makes students so passionate about science

I bought this book for my daughter. She always tries to invent something useful or useless from any stuff she can find at home or shop.

If adults explain all effects and structures of all experiments from this book, their kid will be very clever and proud.

I recommend it for NOT lazy children and adults!

Alexander.
