Format: Paperback
This book covers philosophy of science topics, the theory of selection, and their intersection. It is a collection of essays.

The late David Hull was a wise and well-read individual regarding these topics - and he was also a pretty lucid writer.

David is always interesting and entertaining. I found there were still quite a few points of disagreement between himself and I. To briefly go over a few of them:

Hull favours the "replicator" terminology. He says that "gene" has too many connotations of being related to DNA. By contrast, I think the "replicator" terminology has caused much confusion, that "gene" is the best term for it, and that we should call the science of heredity "genetics".

Hull argues for the virtues of the term "interactor". To me this seems like a close synonym for "phenotype" (though Hull argues that genes also qualify as "interactors"). "Phenotype" is jargon, but it is at least well-known jargon. I tend to use the terms "phenotype", "gene product" and "meme product" - instead of "interactor".

Hull argues for genes being defined to be "active". I am OK with genes that are neutral. I think defining genes as being "active" makes the term more complex, less useful and less scientific. Determining whether a gene is "active" requires testing it in a large number of environments.

Hull argues for a complex definition of "natural selection" involving inheritance, selection and variation.
