A much needed ray of sunlight into a highly misunderstood subject, the conflict between philosophy and the metaphysical question, and "science" as it is expounded by the followers of Scientism. The book can be a long read, and the authors vary in their ability to effectively communicate their arguments to the lay audience, but it approaches this important subject head on, and rewards careful reading.

This book is a mixed bag. Roger Scruton's analysis of science's intrusion into the humanities is excellent and highlights the unintelligibility of using the methods of natural science to discuss the meaning of artistic works. His example of the Venus of Urbino is telling. The art critic is interested in what the painting signifies, in what meanings lie within it; the scientist can only tell us of what materials the painting is composed. Principe's discussion of the historical relationship between science and religion is also intriguing, and Swinburne's examination of the improvability of physical determinism is a worthy addition to technical philosophy. Some of the other essays are far less cogent than these, particularly Hacker's, which makes dismissive claims about, among other things, the free will debate that just aren't true. He claims the issue is completely decided in favor of free will, even though plenty of other thinkers claim the exact opposite (e.g., Sam Harris in his short work "Free Will"). Hacker's bold statements are not backed up with any facts; he just makes them decisively. Furthermore, an ulterior motive is clear in every chapter: to make room in our understanding for faith. In the debate about how far the methods of natural science should extend, arguments for faith are not only of little importance but also stand upon weak rhetorical legs, ultimately coming down on the wrong side of Pyrrhonic Skepticism by claiming that we can infer god from the gaps in our knowledge. To argue for faith is to overlook issues of real importance, such as Hawking's claim that philosophy is dead or Pinker's deluded call for novelists (among others) to be more scientific. We need to advance clear refutations of such stupidities, not vaguely call upon a faith which can (and should) never be more than personal.

This is an initial comment rather than review as I have only looked at the inroductory pages outlining the scope and intent of the book. I am very much looking forward to reading it, and have given it 5 temporary stars because of the importance of the topic matter. My area of work in social sciences and often with cultures outside of my own means research methodology can be an awkward fit and imposes a logic that may be inconsistent with the world views and priorities of those who are subjects. This book may offer a framework for me to engage in serious reflection about epistemology, ontology and methodology that may impact my work.
