This is not an excellently written series. It reads like a poorly edited first attempt at writing
I Have read the first 4 "books";
-The Inventor's Son: The Beginning, expanded .
-The Inventor's Son
-The Scientist's Son
-The Explorer's Son
So far the writing is a bit inelegant . Modern phrases are sprinkled about which should have been removed in editing as they don't fit with the era the story is set in.
Why did I give this such a low rating ? *spoilers*
1) Ethan is 12/13 and his father pretty much abandons him for most of the series & by book 5 we still don't have a really good reason why.
<there is a reason but to have him not show up at any of the key crises points at all seems to suggest that he's protecting himself & purposely putting his son in harms way. Since the whole series hinges on Ethan trying to find his father, the reason why his father went away needs to be compelling & so far it isn't.>
2)12/13 year old falls for a girl & kisses her. Yes he is certain she's the love of his life & the only one for him forever. Ridiculous plot ploy.
4)"Bitch" is used a good bit. This is a preteen/tween book so totally unnecessary
3) The crazy man's "monster" is VERY horrible...very violent & not only wants to crush children's heads, but has a sexual "thing" for young boys.
5)! totally too far with the blood, guts, gore & pedophile subject for the target reader.
4) Hero policeman keeps shouting things like "sweet Jesus"....much too often.
5)The main character spends a bit of time contemplating suicide
6) main character comes into acquaintance with prostitutes& mistresses of family members...why so much adult subjects in a kid's book ! ?
7)Evil people who are after Ethan are really violent. People are dismembered, hung, exploded and the like in detailed description.
8) Main character is told that his mother got pregnant before she was married & had an abortion .
9)torture & assassination
10)Main character is addicted to morphine
so by the end of book 5 you know why everyone is after Ethan, but his father still hasn't shown up.
More importantly, Ethan continues to be unlikable. I actually found myself becoming fond of his cousin Theodore ! I read this because it was free.
