As with other books by former Scientologists such as Leah Remini, Mike Rinder, Marc Headley and Janis Gilham Grady, I never cease to be a combination of amazed, angered, shocked and horrified at the very least about what they and countless others endured at the various levels of involvement with this sham of a so-called “church” and “religion”; that one could rise to the highest executive and departmental heights of the organization one day to scrubbing toilets, ships and dumpsters and being mentally and, in many cases, physically tortured by an evil despotic dictator of a man like David Miscavige, all in the name of “clearing and saving the planet” is the epitome of cruel hypocrisy and I applaud all of these uniquely amazing people, including this author Amy Scobee, for speaking out about all the abuses and injustices perpetrated by this fraudulent entity; a fantastic read and I’m so glad I have continued to explore all of these stories (this review is by Stephen London, husband of Mary Kay Wojtkowski, who is listed below and whose name this book is under as a reader)

like a script out of a sci-fi movie!

I was overwhelmed with this story. I didn't give it 5 stars only because I found it hard to keep up with at times---the terms and the whole organization of the Sea Org. is like a script out of some weird movie. I cannot believe that this type of mental and physical abuse is happening in our day and time. I cannot believe any religious organization would ever take a child at the age of 14 and start seperating her from her parents and having her drop out of school to serve in this cult madness. The whole "confessional" thing is insanity--the prison type camps and mind control is degrading, and the seperation from any type of family and spouses is the worst type of emotional torture. I cannot see how anyone can be a part of scientology knowing this is the foundation. Please send every one of the celebrities who back this religion, if you want to call it that, to Sea Org. for a round of all this author has been through and see how they like it.

If you want to know the ins and outs of Scientology, read this book. It will make you wonder why Tom Cruise is so "special" that he doesn't have to "pay the price" for being one of these whacked out folks. He has all his freedoms, he comes and goes as he pleases, he has all his liberties, he doesn't have to stay in a dungeon for what he has done, who is has mispleased or what wrong thing he said. This is a story about the behind-the-scenes of what it really means to join up with this cult. It is nothing less than mind, body and spirit control The story itself stayed with me for days after reading it. And it won't take you long to read it because you can't put it down. It is a good read, an easy read, not so much Scientology-speak as some books I've read. I read it in an afternoon and half the next day. I wanted to read it again but it spooks me to even think about it. This cult needs to be done away with. It's no different than the way a third-world country treats it's poor people. And the Brain Washing!! Oh, the brain washing! It is to the point that no matter what they do to you, you always think it's YOU who are the wrong one, when you've done nothing wrong at all. And you're screaming at them the whole way, "GET OUT!" When I was through reading it, I felt it all the way through my day. Thanking God I wasn't in this cult, thanking God I could actually go outside and go to the store of my choice without fear of someone following me and recording my every move. I can recommend reading this book but not a second time. Not for a looooooong time!

Unfortunately, Amy Scobee isn't a writer and should have used the services of a good editor; however, her revelations about the behavior of Scientology's hierarchy shouldn't be surprising. Whenever you deal with a cult, or cult-like mentality, there's going to be someone at the top who'll abuse their authority and resources, especially the followers who allow themselves to be subjected to the indignities identified in the book. Fortunately, there doesn't seem to be the finality of a James Jones, but who knows how long before that would happen with the control issues that are so widely distributed within the Scientology cult. It reminds me of the documentary I saw, "Jesus Camp," which was about the brainwashing of children in the name of religion. With all the atrocities committed in the name of religion, you'd think that people would realize the dangers of blind faith. A supplement read to this book would be Eric Hoffer's "True Belieiver," an interesting view into the minds of those who follow without question.

This not the first thing that I've read about (scientology). How can anyone let them self get involved with a CULT like them. Also how did they manage to get Tax Exemption from IRS by claiming that they are a Church. All that I have read, not once have I seen anything about Church Services, it is mostly about controlling a person life, and it seems that the more they pay the higher they can get in the Cult. Then if they don't do as told they are not down to the hole and made to scrub floors etc. and the person that is made to do this puts up with this kind of treatment. THEY ARE REALY BRAIN WASHED.

Right now they are trying a court case in New Braunfels, TX all about the miss treatment by scientology, if you leave they turn you for ever it seems.

This has to be one of the most amazing tales of personal hardship ,posing as a church , as you could read . Amy has a very good tale to tell and I bet the Church of Scientology don't like it a bit . I'm surprised that Congress has not opened up an enquiry into the operations of the Church of Scientology given the well documented abuses that are taking place in the Church . Amy details her experiences in a clear and at times very moving way ,particularly when talking about the way the Church separated her from her father and mother . The Church probably owes her and her husband millions of dollars in lost earnings . Even though they have left the church they are still being followed and harassed to this day .

I am pretty fascinated by religions in general and I enjoyed Amy's insights into her time spent in this church. It makes for jaw dropping reading, especially as she was a member for such a long time. You don't even read it for any goss on celebrity members as the day to day lives of ordinary members is shocking enough to read what they will put up with and the levels of control they are subject to.

The first obscenity is allowing this organisation to refer to itself as a church. OED definition : .a building used for public Christian worship' American dictionary definition : a building used for public Christian worship. The entire edifice reeks of abuse of financial muscle and Mafia like control of power.
The IRS individuals who granted it churn charitable status need to be intensively investigated and charitable status needs to be rescinded. This is a very creepy, abusive, abusive cult that needs exposed and annihilated.
