About the Author

I was born in 1965 in January and was brought up in a village on the outskirts of Hull. I had a happy childhood and much of what is in this novel is a reflection of my life then. I was not a good student but eventually found myself at the University of Sheffield studying law. I even went to Bar school at the Inns of Court in London and, even more improbably, passed. It was a last desperate fling of the student life I was reluctant to leave behind. Later, I moved to Spain with the idea of spending a year teaching English. I never left and have spent more than twenty years living here, the last fifteen or so in Seville. I share my home with two cats: an evil, cross-eyed Siamese and jet black one that behaves like a dog. I work as the director of a large language school but in my free time I like working with my hands: cooking, carpentry, sewing, drawing and model making. I enjoy good food and red wine and whiling away the afternoon on a terraza yarning to my friends. Life, for the most part, is good. ‘The Sciontree’ is my first novel though I have three more planned based on the same characters. The second one, ‘Lost Within’ is set in winter in the village of Little Lostwit

This is a good read. Well written and involving the story is quite believable and allows the reader to suspend some of their previous reality beliefs. A little bit scifi, a bigger bit mysterious happenings and creatures, a lot of adventure and growing up. Very worthwhile read.

I absolutely loved this book! The setting is great and the characters... well, we should all have such great friendships! I enjoyed it, but my 14-year-old nephew, who lacks enthusiasm for anything other than computer games, thought it was "really cool!" His mother, my sister-in-law, has been super effusive in her gratitude for getting her son to read an entire book! And I mustn't forget to mention the whole Sci-fi/Celtic thread in the plot. This writer has an amazing capacity to weave historical fact with fiction. Would I recommend it? Well, my X-box addicted nephew reading solidly for a weekend says it all!

Just finished reading this book last night. I like the overall premise and the author has done some nice character development, but the writing needs some work. So does the proofreading and editing. (In the early part of the book, a character is called "Livia." Later on, more than once, she's called "Lidia.") The author apparently enjoys long, run-on sentences and needs to learn how to use periods and commas correctly. He could build tension more effectively by breaking up his sentences. Even with those weaknesses, I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

The story draws you in from the very first lines and remains intriguing and entertaining throughout, thanks in part to its wonderful imagery, believable and endearing characters, and colourful language. The kindle edition which I read could use some editing, but it’s still an excellent read. Can’t wait to find out what happens next!

As a big fan of adventure novels I am delighted with The Scion Tree. I really enjoyed this reading despite not being English native. After a few pages you feel transported to The Four Corners and are caught by the charm of the world created by Mr Duffield. Even as an adult reader you will quickly identify with the story and characters, invoking our desires for adventure and discovery. The characters are solid, the environment is full of details, and the peculiarities of the inhabitants of Bogglehole continually make you smile. With a steady and streamlined tempo the story unfolds with twists and surprises that keep the interest until the end, including a masterful closing of the plot.
I highly recommend this reading, I hope the author publishes his next book soon to relive adventures in The Four Corners.

It is a really good feeling when you read a book by a new author and you can't put it down. That's what happened when I started reading this book! Each page is as gripping as the next and as the plot unfolds the reader is taken on a journey of discovery, adventure, humour and mystery. The only downside is waiting for the next one....

This novel was recommended to me by a friend of mine and I'm going to have to thank her because I've had a great time reading it and was hooked from the first page. The plot is incredibly clever, full of intrigue, humour and surprises. In fact, I can't remember the last time I read a book that I found difficult to put down. Although the genre is fantasy/science fiction, all the action takes place in a small village in Yorkshire and I'd say this novel is not at all typical for the genre. Normally, I wouldn't dream of picking up something like this and the only other novel I could liken it to that I have read is 'Northern Lights', so adults and young people should enjoy the read equally. The authors writes with sensitivity and humour and spins a wonderful story. The descriptions are so vivid, almost cinematographic that I felt I was there in the story along with the characters. The protagonists are totally credible and there are some hilarious moments, alongside moments of terror, sadness and joy. A really wonderful book, highly recommended!!

I was absolutely gripped by The Sciontree, so much so that I read it in a weekend. The author creates an endearing, believable little village-world in East Yorkshire for the setting of his first novel, populated by characters you almost feel you know.
The main characters are four slightly disenchanted teenagers who are thrown together to investigate a series of puzzling and increasingly sinister in their village. Their adventures become more and more dangerous, and the plot twists and turns dazzlingly, leaving the reader breathless and entirely hooked.
This is a combination of fantasy, sci-fi, mythology and science, beautifully woven together, with science definitely leading the way.
The finishing touch, for me, was the author's use of Yorkshirisms; not too many, nothing obscure, but they definitely add to the friendly, village feeling of the book.
