Well written and researched with obvious respect for Scipio Africanus but not in any way does Mr. Hart edge toward gushing in his praise. Logical and thorough with engaging commentary. Well done biography with a concise and even timeline done to inform and entertain. Thanks to the author, well done sir.

Great account of a great general

There are a lot of positive reviews here. I wanted to add another so that anyone browsing Kindle history titles would be more likely to run into this book.

This is well worth the read! I've read a lot of history covering this era, but the details on Scipio were usually scant, appearing as a footnote to Hannibal's invasion of Italy. This gave a lot better sense of Scipio the person, and was a reminder that the outcome (Roman victory) was hardly guaranteed until the very end. I especially liked the Spanish campaigns, the details of which were new to me.

My eyes are opened by this awesome treatment of others' work describing or hero worshiping Scipio Africanus. I thoroughly enjoyed the treatment and conclusions and comparisons with other "captains". I say hero worship, since this to me seems clearly expressed in much of the work. It almost tempts me to either just believe or be the better man and read the sources to see if or whether this is justified.

The history supports Hart's premise. Scipio was one cool general and statesman. I found the book a little difficult to read, mostly owing to the outdated vocabulary and syntax. That said, it was still worth the effort to plough through.

As a historian I had often read of Hannibal and his brother, but could never find very much about the man who brought about the downfall of Carthage. This wonderful work by Liddle-Hart fills that gap. This should be required reading in every class on the History of the Roman Empire, every military theory course, and every leadership program.
