The story is the journey as they head back to Bainsport, their home. Along the way, there are extended conversations that must take place to learn the extent of the problems. If push comes to shove, the men will protect Io over Xavier. For once, Xavier honestly listens to what Io has to say with the help of Mark. Reminders from his trusted men, “You cannot bed your marriage better.” Xavier reminding Io, “I always think of you, Io, I cannot go half a heartbeat without thinking of you.” “I was nothing more than an empty chest. But you give me riches I could not think of before. You are my heart, my very soul. It is only with you that I am filled with boundless wealth. There is no one else for me, Io. There never was, there never will be.”
In this fifth addition to the Worship series, there is plenty of dialogs that will help set the marriage of Xavier and Io on a better course. It will also contribute to preparing the reader for the next installment in this series. I look forward to seeing what will happen as they return home and Xavier steps up to the plate and puts his house in order. As with each of these books, there is a huge cast of characters that are all vital to the tale. Will we learn who has made several assassination attempts against Io? How will Xavier deal with his mother, Lady Charlotte, and the Blakes, especially Lady Sabrina? Will Xavier and Io be able to return to the happy marriage before trouble darkened their household?
With the help of Gunther, Mark, Simon, Jon, and Lucas, Xavier will finally see what he and his witch of a mother have put Io through. Xavier's men will also do their best to bring our couple a better understanding of each other. This story also ends with a HFN but the next (hopefully the conclusion) will see Io's return to face Xavier's mother and hopefully, the revelation of identity of the assassin/s.
As I am an impatient person, I would still suggest reading books 3-6 back to back (yes, I know book 6 is not out, yet).
The author has written a story that painstakingly demonstrates how easily misunderstandings can happen between two people who love each other. How often our actions speak louder than our words - but we are unaware of those actions as they're second nature. They feel rather unrealistic for a book set in the time of knights, but I like the tight knit group of men who are loyal to both Io and Xavier and who so clearly see what the two lovers do not. Mark, in particular, is very modern in his ability to interrogate and understand human psychology. It was great to see Xavier finally get a clue because his men force him to see that his actions made his words meaningless to Io. Beyond that, the number of times Io is grievously wounded and on the precipice of death, but still pulls through is ridiculous - particularly for a time before modern medicine and antibiotics.
To be fair, this book ends with more resolution than prior ones, but we remain ignorant of who all the baddies are, and I really, really hope to see Charlotte get the comeuppance she so richly deserves - the witch!
Soooooo, I await book 6 with bated breath and a rather childish pout.
