Product Description

Scoobys All Star Laff-A-Lympics: Volume One

After Olympic fever swept the nations, especially the United States in 1976 (the nation's bicentennial), the worldwide sporting competitions would be sorely missed until 1980, as well as 1984, when the U.S. would be the host nation for the Summer Games. Fortunately Hanna-Barbera provided a worthy substitute in animated form as up to 45 of their cartoon characters (classic and otherwise) were featured on this show competing for the gold medal. While some events were similar to real-life Olympic events, most were pretty offbeat and quite unusual, and could only be done on cartoons like this. Among these weird events were racing on ostriches, camels, kangaroos, rickshaws and unicycles, as well as scavenging for creatures like the Abominable Snowman, vampires, and the Loch Ness Monster. With events like these, each Laff-A-Lympics was bound to be a major adventure!

Every four years, the Olympic Games captivate America with sporting events featuring athletes from around the world. In 1977, Hanna-Barbera capitalized on the huge popularity of the 1976 Olympics and the TV series Battle of the Network Stars by creating a cartoon version of the Olympics. It featured Snagglepuss and Mildew Wolf as announcers and pitted cartoon teams called the Scooby Doobies, Yogi Yahooeys, and Really Rottens against one another in unconventional sporting events that took place around the globe. The Scooby Doobies team was composed mainly of 1970s cartoon characters like Scooby-Doo, the Blue Falcon, Dynomutt, and Captain Caveman; the Yogi Yahooeys was made up of 1950s and 1960s characters such as Huckleberry Hound, Yogi Bear, and Boo-Boo Bear; the Really Rottens included villains like Mumbly, the Dalton Brothers, and the Creepleys. In all, 45 cartoon characters faced off in events as varied as downhill skiing, swamp-buggy racing, cliff diving, fox hunting, three-legged kilt racing, photographing the Loch Ness Monster, and rickshaw racing. The Really Rottens could always be counted on to cheat by employing every imaginable dirty trick, but their team always got what they deserved thanks to the use of replays and hidden "cheater cameras." As for the Scooby Doobies and the Yogi Yahooeys, the team members consistently tried their quirky best to secure a victory for their team. Scooby's All Star Laff-A-Lympics is silly cartoon fun that evokes plenty of childhood memories and is ripe for sharing with a whole new generation of kids. (Ages 6 and older) --Tami Horiuchi
