I have SO MANY FEELINGS about this book, and all of them good! I am a big fan of AE Wasp, but Score immediately became my favorite book she has written. Connor and Beau are just.. ahh <3 <3 <3
Connor is struggling under the weight of everything he is suddenly responsible for. He had to leave the Marines and return home to Hidden Creek, TX four months before the start of the book due to tragic circumstances. He finds himself at once the guardian of his four younger siblings and needing to finish repairing the damage Hurricane Harvey caused to their family home. Between fighting off a bigoted jerk from social services, working full-time, working on the repairs to their home, and his siblings, Connor has no time or energy for anything or anyone else... until Beau.
Beau is a professional hockey player in the ECHL who has spent years traveling the country playing for team after team. Now in Hidden Creek, he meets Connor thanks to a car issue and instantly falls in lust with the gorgeous mechanic. When he finds himself offering to help with Connor's home repairs in order for him to finish on time, Beau hopes to have a little fun with Connor while he is in town. He is a drifter, after all, never putting down roots anywhere and not going home to his family much.. and he likes it that way. Or does he?
Gah, this book! Connor and Beau are simply magic together. The banter, the almost instantaneous connection, and the sexually-charged energy between them drew me in completely. Their chemistry is undeniable and so damn hot! But more than that, the way they treat each other and the tenderness that develops between them... *insert swoony sigh here*. These men truly bring out the best in each other and I adored every sentence on the way to their HEA. I was like a moth to their flame reading this story. Seriously.
Aside from the romance I clearly fell in love with, I adored the kids! Sean, Fiona, Micah, and especially Benji just stole my heart completely. And it all started with a rather unexpected and hilarious wedding... for guinea pigs. Seriously, guys, you have to read this book. It cracked me up so many times. There is a lot of humor and love within these pages, but there is also pain and sorrow. I lost my stepfather (who raised me as his own my entire life) less than five years ago and have three younger sisters who were young when it happened, so the pain these children and Connor are feeling over the loss of their parents resonated with me in a powerful way. While reading, I spent half the time laughing while spending a good amount crying because AE Wasp captured those feelings of loss so brilliantly. But don't worry, it isn't overwhelming - the story is balanced so well. Truly her best work to date.
I really enjoyed the entire Men of Hidden Creek series and the books the other authors wrote for it, but this story stole my heart and won't give it back. If you haven't read it, or the rest of the series yet, what are you waiting for??
Former Marine Connor Casey returned home following the death of his mother. Oh, and did I mention that the family home had been nearly destroyed by Hurricane Harvey. Connor has been away in the service and barely knows his half-siblings. Marines are not trained to fill in for deceased parents and now, without a training manual or experience, Connor is responsible for keeping the family together, fixing the home within a tight deadline.
I don't want to ruin your appreciation of this crazy story by spilling the beans. Let's just stay that this story is heart-breaking, soul-shaking, earth-quaking and yes, even love-making. You, the reader, will experience the full range of emotions, with the characters in the story. There are secondary characters to despise, others who engender strong dislike and yet others who make you warm and fuzzy with electric shocks like those you experience when walking in stockings on a carpet in the winter. Oh yes, there are zingers - "warm for my form" for example. An occasional slip of the tongue and sprinkles, of incredible humor. You will meet a van named Lady Gaga, a Prince named Connorette and Breaumeo, a handsome knight with blue hair and beefy arms, There are teens and tweens, attitudes and parenting mishaps.
Yes, yet another favorite book, a 5-star delight.
