Sadly, the DVD transfer, while acceptable, is not great, although the extras - audio commentary by Ricky Tognazzi and Claudio Bonivento, documentary Judging La Scorta, US trailer and original Italian trailer - are good.
La Scorta, the escorts, or actually the Bodyguards, tells the story of four diverse men detailed to guard the life of yet another Judge sent from the North to try and keep peace and justice in this faction riddled land.
The men have some trouble getting along together but eventually end by forming a tight and close band dedicated to preserving the life of the Judge they are committed to protect.
For who knows this period of Sicilian history the ending is plausible. For others it might come as a surprise. The original Italian dialog is very good. Sub titles are available.
The plot is simple. A judge investigating the mafia in Sicily is assassinated. Whether by the mafia or members of the government is not clear. A new judge volunteers. His bodyguards have about the same budget as the film. They have to share body armor, their cars aren't armored, they have to negotiate to get more than 20 litres of gas. Soon it becomes clear that there is more corruption and resistance to the new Judge's work. Threats and warnings. Finally the judge can only trust his bodyguards, who take on more and more responsibilities in the investigation - meanwhile we participate in their private lives. Children, terrified wives, girlfriends.
The bodyguards are heroic not so much in a conventional physical sense, but in a moral sense. They don't want to die, but they are fiercely loyal to the judge, who is dour but determined.
Of course it escalates into tragedy, Italy in the 70s was a tragedy.
The only better film I know of about this topic, and just as obscure, is Francesco Rosi's "illustrious Corpses" (Lino Ventura). Also Rosi's "Three Brothers" covers some of the same ground. (Rosi was an assistant of Visconti.) All are highly recommended.
If you want a Hollywood action movie, this ain't it. But if you want a compelling and engrossing drama with action elements - La Scorta is absolutely worth your time.
