Let me start by noting that, while I've installed quite a few car stereos of varying complexity, I'm not a "professional installer". I do have some electrical engineering in my educational background, though, and I'm somewhat anal about wiring. :)

So, in looking at the kits available, I decided on this one to install an older Directed Electronics 5 channel amp with a dynamic power rating of 600 watts. This kit comes with power, ground, and remote turn-on wires, one set of RCA cables, a mini ANL fuse holder w/ a 50 amp fuse, and a few terminals. Pretty standard, on the surface. However, it's the details that set this apart.

First, there's 17 feet of power wire. There's about a 10 inch piece pre-terminated with a ring terminal on one end, and already connected to the fuse holder on the other. That piece is covered with a nylon mesh for better abrasion resistance, and the mesh is finished on both ends with some heat shrink. The ring terminal has a silicone (I think) boot on it as well, and the fuse holder has a grommet the wire passes through to make a good seal with the fuse holder (not waterproof, more like splash resistant). Then there's about 17 feet (I didn't measure; I'm trusting the box) more that you'd run from the fuse holder back to your amp. The first few feet of this piece is also covered by the mesh with heat shrink on the ends, so the under-hood part of your install will be very nice. My battery's in the trunk, so this does little for me - but it's still very nice. :) There's also about a foot of ground wire, encouraging you to properly ground the amp to the frame (or something). This reduces resistance due to long wires, but does increase the chance of ground loop noise; both schools of thought on grounding have valid points.

This is the second wiring kit I've ever purchased and I just wished they had been the first as well. The materials used are of such high quality for the price that its hard to believe theyre not fake. The power cable is encased in a heat resistant material that I havent seen on other cables. The wiring kit does come with a fuse, unlike what some people have said about this product. The RCA cables, other than looking super cool, are top of the line. I didnt personally have to use them when i wired my amp but I am using them for my personal computer surround sound system. I thought i was overpaying when i bought this wiring kit but i know for sure that i got the steal of a lifetime. Be aware though that this kit doesnt come with speaker wire, like many other wiring kits. I feel like its better that way, though, because you dont really need 8 gauge speaker cable (it gets cumbersome and its just all around not necessary). Don't cheap out and get a lesser quality set. Since youre getting an amp that already needs an 8 gauge cable, you might as well spend the extra cash. You wont be disappointed. These cables are so nice that I basically spent the entire first night they came just looking at them. The kit comes with everything you need, from black zip ties to blend in, to a water proof grommet. You wont have to go looking for any extra parts after getting this kit, except for the speaker wire as I previously mentioned. Dont doubt the purchase, just do it.

This is a good kit, however the grommet is way bigger than necessary for an 8GA cable. I ended up getting a rubber grommet pack and found one that fit my power lead. The supplied waterproof grommet would require a hole larger than my 3/4 in drill bit, (2 to 3 times the diameter of the cable) I think the cable was only 5/8 in. Anyway their grommet only has rubber on the inside to make watertight, no o-ring to make the seal between plastic and firewall, only the cable is made watertight. The RCA cable appears to be of good quality, but I am wiring up a subwoofer and only need one RCA cable and I don't need 17 foot RCA cable, so I bought a 6', single RCA cable. Anyway, you get an 8 gauge copper strand wire cable (not copper clad aluminum), A fuse holder, 50A fuse. Ring terminals on power and ground (the ring terminals are kind of small would prefer larger rings for seat bolts or battery side posts), It also included a remote turn on wire and some assorted crimp on terminals and zip ties. Overall, it seems well made. I like that the kit came with a fuse, as my Amp said to use 100A fuse with no reference to the wire gauge. This led me to google what size amp vs wire gauge. And 50 is good for 8AWG wire. Important safety tip, if your fuse is rated higher than your wire gauge, your wire becomes the fuse which means it will get hot and burn before the fuse blows. And since it is made out of copper, and not fusible material, it will just get really hot and start burning. Not what you want under your passenger seat. Or wherever you put your amp.Read more ›

This cable set is well built. Just enough length to run end-to-end thru my Jeep Patriot. Good dense protective outer insulation for running. The only con to this product uses low quality lugs which have a soft protective insulator. When crimping they don't crimp equally and get lopsided causing the wire not to be held securely. A quick run to the hardware store for a couple pennies and you have a good connection.
