- The yellow sponge material used to be stiffer. Now it feels worn out the minute you start using it.
- The yellow sponge part is thinner than before.
- The Scotch-Brite layer is only half as thick as before, so it wears out quickly.
- You get a disturbing bright yellow dye in your suds, even after several uses. The old ones released minimal dye during the first use, then no visible dye after that.
I happened to have one last unused "old style" sponge to compare these with. The pictures attached to this review are from the first use of both sponges. They were both rinsed and wrung out for the appearance comparison, then suds-upped and squeezed out onto a white plate for the suds comparison.
Even if I had never used these before, the dye issue alone would cause me to steer clear, at least for dishes. These are probably still fine for scrubbing sinks. That's assuming the sink is already yellow or you want it to eventually be yellow.
However - buyer beware - these sponges are much thinner and nowhere near the quality that they used to be. The company has made some significant changes to their manufacturing practices and these sponges now fall apart after about three days of normal use. I suppose there were multiple reasons that they made the change. First, the quantity and grade of material used has decreased significantly, thus reducing Scotch-Brite's overall cost to manufacture this product. Since they haven't changed the price, the material costs saved go directly to their bottom line. Secondly, and potentially even more significant, a product that is inferior in quality and falls apart sooner needs to be replaced more frequently. Thus, a consumer who goes through twice as many sponges as they previously did will theoretically buy twice as many.
Not me. I will never buy these or any other Scotch-Brite products again unless they make a commitment to revert to their previous manufacturing practices. They will need to show me that they deserve my business, and are not willing to sacrifice quality of product for profit. To be honest, I would have rather had access to the same high-quality sponges that I have used for years and paid a little bit more for them.
Again, I urge you to think twice before purchasing these sponges. They no longer hold up to the "Heavy Duty" claim that is printed on their packaging.
The only problem I have with these particular sponges is that they don't really seem to hold my dish soap for very long. Lately I've been using regular Dawn, which I've used on and off for years. But it seems like, no matter how much soap I put on the sponge to start, three dishes later I need more. That never used to happen with other sponges I've used, so my only choice is to blame this sponge.
Still, they're sponges and they work well and they're cheap. No great reason not to get them.
I use these scrubbers in other places in my house too. I keep on in the bathrooms, great to run over the shower tile or glass doors (without scratching) to attack soap scum. I keep one in the garage to use when trash cans are scrubbed out and dumpsters (I actually take the older one from the kitchen and move it to the garage). I wash my patio furniture with a Scotch-Brite because sometimes you just need a scrubber. I am sure there are more uses I haven't found yet.
Not only do these scrubber sponges become indispensable, they are also very affordable especially bought in a multi pack like Amazon has.
