I find I'm enjoying the Dottite Manderson series tremendously and this novella is no exception. It's a bridge of sorts, giving us an interesting and fairly complete story, while setting the stage for future books. Not an easy thing to do in this shorter format but Ms Allan nailed it. One odd note about the main character's behavior in terms of her relationship - it's rather volatile. Hot/cold, in love/hates him, etc. I realize the author needs the conflict between the two as part of the story line for however long and I understand this is a young woman in the process of maturing from ingenue to young woman. Still, Dottie strikes me as a bit more sensible, grounded and understanding than this, even if she's more firmly rooted on the side of ingenue at this point. Didn't stop me from enjoying the story just had me thinking "huh?". The good news is the next release is scheduled for the fall and I'm really looking forward to it.
The character of the heroine Dottie has sunk low in my estimation. From the first book I enjoyed the writing and the characters.Dottie must have fallen out of favor with the author. She has changed her into a self-absorbed twit who holds her supposed love to a far higher standard than she holds herself. Not sympathetic at all. The plot isn't bad - contrived, but not terrible. Not as terrible as Dottie's character progression.
This doesn't disappoint. It's a spoiler to say that a police officer can actually have a heart. I truly like Dottie, but she is a bit of a brat. If I were her best friend I would shake her. Can't wait for the next book to see how things are working out.
Overall, good book, interesting characters, good mystery. Then in the last page or two, a weird twist where the two main characters suddenly have an inexplicable, irreconcilable falling out, and boom the book ends. Makes no sense. Close to ruined what was a very enjoyable read.
I had liked the characters in previous books, but got tired of the contrived ways to keep the two lovers apart. The plot seemed rushed and confusing. I prefer a straight forward mystery story and a less complicated love story.
