It is lighthearted, yet deep, with lots of truth and wisdom woven throughout the tale.
The friendship is what struck me the strongest. Two girls with a common destiny yet one has been taught to feel less than the other by someone who has more invested in the situation than the well-being of the girls and wraps it up as a caring emphasizing their own-will as something that is the characters birthright and needs to be set straight.
The girls have to learn to trust and decide for themselves whether or not they will accept the fate that everyone else is convinced is theirs and cannot be avoided. It is the journey of friendship in an adventure fraught with peril.
The characters have to make hard decisions sometimes with intangible facts based on the distant past or their own perceptions of the way things really are that will change their lives and everyone and anyone who calls Scotland home forever.
I, also, highly recommend listening to this one too, if you enjoy audible books and love legend and lore of Scotland. It enhanced the sense of fun and adventure and was a delight to listen to. It translated well to sound.
Katharina Gerlach is a confident writer and one can readily surmise that her amorous flirtation with her subject matter is genuine, as her inventiveness is matched only by elite research skills, which allow her to plumb the depths of the mystical secrets contained within the lochs of Scotland.
Scotland’s Guardians is easy to read and suitable for children--of all ages--for what adult doesn’t revel in heavenly heughs or become awestruck at the sight of crystal-clear lakes?
From a story perspective, I would have preferred a longer first Act. As the story stands, the heroine journeys to her ‘new’ world almost immediately, passing up an opportunity to set up the events that follow and provide balance to the story. And even though the tale is episodic in nature, the resulting romp through simultaneous worlds never fails to charm the reader. The epicenter of these magnificent worlds is scenic Scotland and Bryanna, in search of her father, is unwittingly indoctrinated into the ways of magic. Her coeval friend, Kaylee, is by her side for the journey, but this arrangement doesn’t portend well for Bryanna. Will she nevertheless be able to navigate through dangerous terrain, circumvent her fate, and ultimately free her father unharmed? You need to read the story to find out! Fasten your seat belt and let Bryanna do it her way!
